What is nabumetone?

Nabumetone is a non-acidic NSAID. Nabumetone uses include the treatment of pain, tenderness, swelling and stiffness often associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It works by reducing the effects of enzymes that are naturally produced in the body which may cause pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. Nabumetone provides significant relief from the pain associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and is available in 500mg or 750mg tablets.

How do I take nabumetone?

What are the possible side effects of taking nabumetone?

If, after taking nabumetone, you experience discomfort or have questions about your body’s reaction, you should contact your doctor. Seek emergency medical treatment if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, including hives, difficulty breathing or you see or feel swelling around your face, lips, tongue or throat. You should contact your doctor if you experience chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, problems with your vision or balance, black or bloody stools, if you begin to cough up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds, you experience rapid weight gain, you begin urinating less than usual or not at all, you experience nausea, low fever, loss of appetite, jaundice, sore throat and headache with blistering or red skin rash or you experience severe tingling, numbness or weakness in your muscles.

Balancing the benefits from nabumetone uses with the potential harmful effects should be discussed between you and your healthcare provider. Other side effects of nabumetone which may subside over time but should be reported to your doctor include upset stomach, mild heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, bloating or gas, dizziness or nervousness, skin itching or rash, blurred vision or ringing in your ears.

What if I forget to take a dose of nabumetone?

If you are prescribed nabumetone on a regular dosing schedule and do not use on an as-needed basis, you should take your nabumetone medication at around the same time each day. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If you are near the time at which you regularly take your nabumetone, skip your missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose.

 

How do I store nabumetone?

Store nabumetone in an airtight container at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect this medication from light and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

 

What happens if I overdose on nabumetone?

If you suspect you have overdosed on nabumetone, contact your medical provider. Symptoms of nabumetone drug overdose usually are limited to lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting and epigastric pain, symptoms which usually disappear with proper care. Extreme overdose symptoms, such as gastrointestinal bleeding, hypertension, acute renal failure, respiratory depression and coma, can occur but are very rare. If the patient has collapsed or is not breathing, contact your local emergency response service by dialing 911. 

Warnings

Taking nabumetone can increase your risk of life-threatening heart or circulation problems and can include heart attack or stroke. Do not use nabumetone just before or after having heart bypass surgery. Nabumetone can also increase your risk for serious stomach or intestinal effects, including bleeding. These effects can occur at any time while taking nabumetone and can be fatal, particularly if you are an older adult.

Do not take any over-the-counter cold, allergy or pain medication while taking nabumetone without first talking to your doctor. Do not drink alcohol while taking nabumetone, as alcohol can increase your risk for stomach bleeding. While taking nabumetone, avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays from sunlamps or tanning beds, as the nabumetone drug can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and result in significant sunburn.
