Tasigna Information:

What is Tasigna?

Tasigna is a kinase inhibitor medicine. It helps treat chronic myelogenous leukemia by stopping the growth of cancer cells. Due to the risk for serious side effects, it is usually only prescribed when first-line treatment options have not worked.

How do I take Tasigna?

Take the Tasigna drug with plenty of water on the schedule prescribed by your doctor, usually once every 12 hours. Do not break open or chew the capsules; if you are unable to swallow capsules whole, talk to your doctor about alternative ways to take this medicine. Avoid eating for at least 2 hours before and 1 hour each dose.

Before taking Tasigna, tell your doctor if:

  • You have any food or drug allergies
  • You are taking any other medications, especially chloroquine, methadone, nefazodone, or an antibiotic
  • You have low potassium or magnesium levels in your blood
  • You have a personal or family history of a heart rhythm disorder called long QT syndrome
  • You have any other heart problems
  • You have had pancreatitis
  • You have liver disease
  • You have high blood pressure or cholesterol
  • You have diabetes
  • You have a blood vessel disease
  • You have diabetes
  • Your stomach has been surgically removed
  • You are breastfeeding or pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Tasigna?

Commonly reported Tasigna side effects include cold-like symptoms, muscle or joint pain, diarrhea, constipation, and fatigue. Possible serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include sudden weight gain, fever with chills, irregular heart rate, severe lightheadedness, vision problems, lower back pain, infrequent urination, slurred speech, hallucinations, and seizures. These are not all the possible side effects of Tasigna; review the risks with your doctor, and always report any conditions that concern you.

What if I forget to take a dose of Tasigna?

Take the missed dose as soon as possible once you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose, you have eaten within the last hour, or you will be eating in the next two hours. In these cases, skip the missed dose and get back to your regular schedule. Do not take two doses close together.

How do I store Tasigna?

Store your Tasigna medicine in a tightly sealed container at room temperature. Do not expose the container to bright light or moisture, and keep it out of reach of any children or pets in your home.

What happens if I overdose on Tasigna?

If you believe that you or someone in your home has overdosed on the Tasigna drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or get to the nearest emergency room. Signs of an overdose may include vomiting and marked drowsiness.

Warnings

Tasigna may make you more prone to infections or bleeding and bruising. Avoid being in contact with people who have contagious infections (such as the flu) and be careful when using sharp objects such as razors. Do not eat or drink grapefruit products while taking Tasigna; grapefruit can increase the amount of this medicine in your bloodstream. Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, as certain drugs can interact with Tasigna. Do not take any stomach acid medication (such as Pepcid) within 10 hours before or 2 hours after taking Tasigna, and don’t take any antacids within 2 hours before or after your Tasigna dose.

Brand Names

As a specialty drug, Tasigna does not have a generic equivalent or alternative brand names. If your doctor believes this is the best course of treatment for you and you’ve been searching for patient assistance options, get a Tasigna coupon or discount card from HelpRx now.
