Azasite Information:

What is Azasite?

Azasite (azithromycin ophthalmic) is a form of the macrolide antibiotic azithromycin used as an eye solution to treat infections of the eye that are caused by bacteria, including conjunctivitis. It works by killing the bacteria.

How do I take Azasite?

Most often, Azasite is taken 2 times daily for 2 days, followed by 1 time daily for 5 days. Always follow your doctor's instructions. Do not use while wearing contact lenses. If your doctor prescribes more than 1 drop per dose, wait 5 minutes between drops. If you take any other eye solutions, wait at least 10 minutes before using that medication unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.

You will need to tip your head back, hold your eyelid open, look away from the eyedropper and squeeze out one drop into your eye. Never touch your eye with the eyedropper. Close your eye and tilt your head forward for a few minutes, keeping a finger pressed against the inside corner of your eye to keep the medication from going into your eye duct.

Before taking Azasite, tell your doctor if:
• You have had a bad reaction to other azithromycin medications before.
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• You wear contacts.
• You currently use any other eye solution medications.
• You are currently taking any other medications, especially antibiotics, or if you regularly use any over-the-counter drugs or supplements.

What are the possible side effects of taking Azasite?

Some very serious side effects can occur with this medication. If you experience any of the following, stop taking this medication and seek emergency medical assistance immediately: burning sensation in the eyes, fever with sore throat, skin pain followed by an unusual purple or red rash with blistering and peeling (especially in the upper body and face), swelling in the face or tongue. These are symptoms of a rare but extremely dangerous reaction.

Other serious side effects of Azasite include: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing or swallowing, hives with itching, swelling in the face, lips, tongue, throat), severe irritation (burning, stinging, or itching) immediately on application, feeling as though something is in your eye, increased light sensitivity, increased drainage and crusting, eye pain, redness or swelling. Seek emergency medical assistance.

Common Azasite side effects do not need medical attention unless they persist or worsen. These include: blurred vision, changes in sense of taste, stuffy nose, mild stinging or irritation in the eyes, mild dryness or itchiness in the eyes. Always see your doctor if your symptoms worsen.

What if I forget to take a dose of Azasite?

Never take extra medication to make up for a missed dose, so if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Otherwise you may take the missed dose as soon as you remember it.

How do I store Azasite?

Store unopened Azasite solution in the refrigerator. Once opened, you can store the solution at room temperature with the lid tightly closed and away from excess moisture and heat (e.g., a bathroom) for about 2 weeks. Never freeze this medication.

What happens if I overdose on Azasite?

Call your local poison control center or seek emergency medical assistance if you suspect overdose.

Warnings

Never touch the Azasite dropper to your eye. It can reinfect you and can cause serious eye problems. Do not stop using or use less of this medication except as instructed, even if your symptoms are better or gone. This could cause the infection to flare up again or to become resistant to antibiotics.

You should not wear contact lenses while you have an eye infection. Never wear contact lenses when applying Azasite. If Azasite is discolored, or if it has particles in it, do not use your medication. Talk to your doctor about receiving a new prescription.

This medication can cause blurred vision. Do not perform potentially hazardous tasks (e.g., driving) until you know how your body will react.

Brand Names

Currently, there are no other brand names for Azasite, and azithromycin ophthalmic is not available on the market as a generic. That means the cost of Azasite can be quite expensive, especially for the amount of time treatment ought to last. Fortunately, we offer a free coupon that will help you save up to 83% on the retail price of Azasite at your local pharmacy. Simply click Claim Discount to print or download your free Azasite coupon and start saving today.
