Betamethasone Dipropionate Information:

What is betamethasone dipropionate?

Betamethasone dipropionate is a strong topical medical used in the treatment of skin conditions that respond to corticosteroids, including psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, allergies, and others. It reduces the itching, redness and swelling that these conditions can cause.

How do I take betamethasone dipropionate?

Betamethasone dipropionate is for use only on the skin – excluding the underarms, face, groin, or for diaper rash. Before and after using this medication, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

Apply a thin layer of betamethasone cream to the affected area of the skin and gently rub it in. Until it dries, protect the treated area from conditions that could rub or wash it away, including clothing and water. Do not cover the treated area with a dressing unless directed to do so by your physician.

If your doctor has prescribed this medication for the treatment of diaper rash, do not use diapers that fit tightly or use plastic pants unless your physician has approved them.

If your doctor ordered a dressing applied over the medication, do so only as directed to prevent over-absorption of the medication.

Contact your doctor if you have any questions.

Before taking betamethasone dipropionate, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or to other corticosteroids (prednisone, hydrocortisone, etc.);
  • You have a history of poor blood circulation;
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are nursing;
  • You have a history of immune system problems or disorders;
  • You have any skin conditions, including rosacea or perioral dermatitis;
  • You have an infection or sore in the area being treated;
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications;
  • You have diabetes or hyperglycemia;

Severe side effects include irregular heartbeat, feelings of listlessness or mood changes, insomnia or other sleep problems, or weight gain. If you experience any of these, or if they persist, contact your physician immediately.

What if I forget to take a dose of betamethasone dipropionate?
