Bunavail Information:

What is Bunavail?

Bunavail is a medication dispensed through a buccal film. It is prescribed to treat patients trying to break their addiction to narcotics or opioids whose withdrawal symptoms interfere with successful recovery. It contains a combination of the drugs buprenorphine and naloxone and works by affecting the central nervous system to imitate the effects of the drugs.

How do I take Bunavail?

Bunavail is administered as a buccal strip that is applied to the mucus membrane on the inside of the mouth once a day. Use the entire film; do not cut, tear, chew, or swallow this medication. To apply, moisten the inside of your cheek using your tongue or by rinsing your mouth with water. Open the Bunavail packaging, grasp the film with clean dry fingers, making sure the text on the film is facing up, and place the film on the moistened area of the cheek with the writing on the film against it. Hold in place for five seconds. Remove your finger and leave the film in place until it dissolves completely.

Before taking Bunavail, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to buprenorphine, naloxone, or any of the ingredients in Bunavail
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements, including other medications to treat drug addiction, seizures, anxiety, or mental illness
  • You are taking iron or niacin supplements, oral contraceptives, or statins
  • You are taking protease inhibitors for treating HIV/AIDS
  • You are taking zafirlukast, cimetidine, erythromycin, verapamil, clarithromycin, isoniazid, diltiazem, cyclosporine, methotrexate, danazol, nefazodone, delavirdine, ethosuximide, dexamethasone, rifampin, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, metronidazole, rifabutin, phenobarbital, troglitazone, phenytoin, or troleandomycin
  • You have, or have had, hallucinations, seizures, or head injuries
  • You have, or have had, adrenal problems such as Addison’s disease, prostate problems,  urinary tract problems, or STDs
  • You have, or have had, gall bladder disease, thyroid disease, heart, liver, lung, or kidney disease, or persistent stomach problems
  • You have a spinal curvature that affects breathing.

What are the possible side effects of taking Bunavail?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Bunavail. Less severe symptoms include excessive sweating, headache, stomach pain, vomiting, constipation, sleep problems and night sweats. If any of these problems persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, and tongue, difficulty breathing or swallowing), loss of appetite, liver problems, opioid withdrawal, symptoms of jaundice, flu-like symptoms, unusual bleeding or bruising, pain in the upper right section of the stomach, malaise, slowed breathing, loss of appetite, or extreme tiredness.

What if I forget to take a dose of Bunavail?

If you forget to take the scheduled dose of Bunavail, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and resume the normal schedule. Do not increase the number of doses or change the dosing regimen to compensate for a missed dose. If you miss two or more consecutive doses, contact your doctor.

How do I store Bunavail?

Keep Bunavail tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the buccal film to freeze. Dispose of any expired or unused doses according to the instructions of a pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Bunavail?

An overdose of Bunavail can be life-threatening. If an overdose is suspected, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include feeling of sleepy, constricted pupils, loss of coordination, slurred speech, blurred vision, and impaired thinking and reflexes.

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Bunavail may make you drowsy; do not drive, operate heavy equipment or machinery, use power tools or handle firearms until its effects are known. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication.
