Celexa Information:

What is Celexa?

Celexa is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) antidepressant also known by the generic name citalopram hydrobromide. Taken as a film coated tablet or as a peppermint flavored oral solution, Celexa is used to treat depression and related disorders. It works by changing the amount of the neurotransmitter serotonin, improving mood by blocking its reuptake (i.e., reabsorption) in the brain.

How do I take Celexa?

This medication is available as either tablets or as an oral solution, and is usually intended to be taken orally 1 time daily. Try to take your Celexa medication at the same time every day for optimum effectiveness.

Dosing will be determined by your doctor. Always follow your doctor's instructions carefully, and do not take more or less than prescribed. If taking the oral solution, use a medical measuring spoon or measuring cup to be precise. Do not suddenly stop taking Celexa as it may cause withdrawal symptoms. Follow your doctor’s advice if you wish to stop taking Celexa medication. Remember: this article is not intended to be a complete medical guide to the Celexa drug, or to be used to determine whether or not to prescribe or take Celexa. For Celexa patient assistance, review the included medication pamphlet or talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Before taking Celexa, tell your doctor if:

  • You take any NSAIDs, including aspirin, or narcotic pain medications.
  • You take any sleep aids or muscle relaxers.
  • You regularly drink alcohol or are an alcoholic.
  • You have a disorder with seizures or are taking a medication used to treat seizures.
  • You are taking any other antidepressants, including St. John's Wart and Lexapro, or psychiatric medications.
  • You have or have a history of heart rhythm disorders, or are taking medication for a heart rhythm disorder.
  • You have fructose malabsorption or you are taking tryptophan supplements.
  • You have migraines or you are taking certain migraine medications.
  • You have low magnesium, potassium, or sodium levels.
  • You have any kidney or liver problems, or a history of kidney or liver problems.
  • You have or have a history of cardiovascular problems, including stroke, high blood pressure, anemia, or any bleeding problems.
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed, as your doctor will need to discuss the risks and benefits of taking antidepressants under these conditions.
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, supplements, or vitamins.

What are the possible side effects of taking Celexa?

Seek medical assistance if you experience any of these severe side effects: difficulty breathing; skin rash; swelling in the face, lips or tongue; headache with or without chest pain and dizziness; fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeats; feeling unsteady; feeling like you might pass out or fainting; shallow or uneven breathing; severe weakness; muscle cramps or rigid muscles; confusion; hallucinations; loss of coordination or slurred speech.

Additionally, you should contact your doctor immediately if: your symptoms get worse, you have trouble sleeping or are feeling restless, you have unusual anxiety or panic attacks, you have new symptoms, you become hyperactive either mentally or physically, you have thoughts of suicide.

Common side effects from taking Celexa include somnolence, insomnia or other sleeping problems, mild nausea, mild upset stomach, dry mouth, stuffy nose or sneezing, sore throat with or without cough, increased urination or diarrhea, changes in weight, increased sweating, sexual difficulties (e.g., impotence, difficulty achieving erection or orgasm, decreased sex drive).

What if I forget to take a dose of Celexa?

You may take your missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose, and never take extra medication or a double dose to make up for the skipped dose.

How do I store Celexa?

Store your Celexa pills or oral solution at room temperature away from heat, light, and moisture (e.g., do not store in the bathroom). Do not freeze. Always keep out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Celexa?

Immediately call your local poison control center. If the person taking Celexa has collapsed or is not breathing, call emergency medical services. Symptoms of an overdose may include: amnesia, confusion, somnolence or coma, tremors or other convulsions or seizures, hyperventilation, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, bluish tint to the skin, irregular heart rates or heartbeat, or kidney problems.

Warnings

Celexa is an antidepressant, and as such, should be administered with caution to teenagers and young adults. Teens and young adults may experience worsening symptoms and suicidal ideations or actions. Parents or caregivers should observe their children when beginning this medication.

Taking high doses (greater than 40 mg per day) Celexa, especially for extended periods of time, can increase the risk of an abnormally prolonged QT interval, which can lead to other potentially fatal conditions.

It may take 1 to 4 weeks for Celexa's benefits to be noticeable, so do not try taking more medication unless instructed to do so by your doctor. If your symptoms worsen, contact your doctor immediately.

This medication may alter your thinking or reaction patterns. Do not drive or perform any potentially hazardous activities until you know how you'll react to Celexa. For complete Celexa patient assistance, review your medication pamphlet for phone numbers, or talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This article is not intended to be a complete guide.
