STDs Information & Discounts

What are STDs?

STDs or sexually-transmitted diseases are passed from one person to another by means of sexual contact. STDs are usually transmitted through bodily fluids such as blood, semen, or vaginal discharge, but some diseases like parasites can be transmitted by simple body to body contact. In recent years, a more preferable term for most STDs has been STIs or sexually transmitted infections, as this is usually the case.

There are several types of STDs including bacterial infections, viral infections, parasites, and fungal infections. Most of these infections can be transmitted through blood, they are not only sexually transmitted but can be transmitted in any situation where human beings exchange blood such as through the use of unsanitary needles. The most prevalent STDs in the United States today are chlamydia and gonorrhea, chlamydia being the number one STD in the country with around 1.5 million new cases being treated annually.

How can I manage an STD?

Prevention

The best way to manage STDs is through prevention. The surest way to prevent STDs is through abstinence and monogamy. The next best way is to use condoms and get tested regularly to make sure that you are not infected. If you haven’t been with a partner for long, or you are having sex with multiple partners, it is essential to get routine STD testing. Condoms are effective at preventing STDs, but they do not have a 100% efficacy rate. Condoms only prevent transmission through sexual intercourse and not other forms of sexual activity. Preventative vaccines can be obtained to protect against the contraction of certain diseases or infections like hepatitis and HPV.

Medication

If you think you have contracted an STD, see your doctor as soon as possible and stop having sex until you are tested. The only way to treat an STD or STI is through medication. Your doctor will diagnose the type of STD you have and then prescribe STD drugs accordingly. If you have an STD, any sexual partners you have should also get tested to make sure they aren’t also infected. Your doctor will tell you how long you and your partner(s) need to refrain from having sex to ensure that the disease or infection has been cured and you don’t continue to pass it back and forth. The most common type of STD medication used is antibiotics. Prescription antibiotics are used for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Some STDs like HPV and AIDS are incurable, but can be managed or kept under control with certain drugs. Read more about STD medications in the next section.

What are the different types of STD medications?

Antibiotics

Because most STIs are caused by bacteria, antibiotics that kill bacteria are commonly prescribed as treatment. Advanced and powerful antibiotics are sometimes prescribed to treat infections like gonorrhea and chlamydia as these bacteria have developed a resistance to older antibiotics. Antibiotics for chlamydia are usually cephalosporin antibiotics. The recommended medicine for gonorrhea is usually a macrolide antibiotic such as doxycycline combined with an aminoglycoside antibiotic. Read more about medication for chlamydia and gonorrhea in the drug information section.

Antivirals & Immune Response Modifiers

Some viral STDs affect the immune system such as HPV, HIV, AIDS, and herpes. These diseases are treated with immune response modifiers or antivirals. Immune response modifiers cause the immune system to react and activate cells that fight foreign bodies such as macrophages and lymphocytes to help the body heal itself. These medicines are used as genital warts medications. Get more information about medication for herpes, genital warts, and HPV medication in the drug information section.

What are the symptoms of STDs?

Due to the extreme variety of STDs, symptoms can vary. Symptoms that are common to many STDs include pain or a burning sensation during urination, unusual discharge from the penis or the vagina, and bumps, sores, redness, burning, swelling, or itching in the genital area. Many STDs can be completely asymptomatic as well, meaning there will be no signs of infection. This is why it is best to get tested regularly. If left untreated, some STDs such as HPV and HIV can develop into cancer and AIDS.
