Diclegis Information:
What is Diclegis?
Diclegis is an antiemetic medicine, a combination doxylamine and pyridoxine, prescribed to treat nausea and vomiting in pregnant women who have not seen improvement after a change in diet or through other measures. Doxylamine is an antihistamine that stops nausea and vomiting by mitigating the effects of histamines; pyridoxine is vitamin B6, which, when lacking, can cause nausea and vomiting.
How do I take Diclegis?
The Diclegis drug is an oral medication in tablet form. The initial dose is once a day with water on an empty stomach at bedtime, or one hour before a meal or two hours after. If symptoms do not improve, your doctor may increase the frequency of dosage; do not change the dosing schedule without a doctor’s permission. Update your doctor regularly as to how feel while taking this medication, and do not stop taking it without permission, even if you feel well.
Before taking Diclegis, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to doxylamine, pyridoxine (vitamin B6), or any of the ingredients in the Diclegis medicine
- You are allergic to antihistamines
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking MAO inhibitors
- You are taking antihistamines or other medications to treat allergies, hay fever, or a cold
- You are taking medications to treat depression
- You are taking muscle relaxers, narcotic medications, sedatives, or other sleep medications
- You have, or have had, asthma or other breathing conditions or problems
- You have glaucoma
- You have ulcers or other gastrointestinal problems, or difficulty urinating; or you are nursing a child
What are the possible side effects of taking Diclegis?
Some patients have reported side effects after taking the Diclegis drug. Less severe symptoms include constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, nose, or throat, headache, muscle pain or weakness, rash, or restlessness. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include blurred or other vision problems, confusion, problems or pain while urinating, dilated pupils, tachycardia or arrhythmia, shortness of breath, seizures, or signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; hives, rash, or itching; or difficulty breathing or swallowing).
What if I forget to take a dose of Diclegis?
If you forget to take your regular dose of Diclegis, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed, and resume the regular schedule. Do not take more than one tablet to make up for the one missed; do not take more than four tablets in a day.
How do I store Diclegis?
Keep the Diclegis medicine tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children, and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expire doses according to the instructions of a pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Diclegis?
If a Diclegis drug overdose is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. However, if the individual has stopped breathing or lapsed into unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
