Duavee Information:

What is Duavee?

Duavee is a combination medication containing estrogens and bazedoxifene. It reduces the risk of developing osteoporosis and treats moderate to severe hot flashes in post-menopausal women. It has not been approved for use in women who have had their uterus removed.

How do I take Duavee?

Duavee comes as tablets inside a blister package. Do not remove the tablets from the packaging until you are ready to take them, and follow your doctor’s dosage instructions carefully. Most women who use this medication take it once a day, at the same time every day. It should be swallowed whole and can be taken with or without food.

Before taking Duavee, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You have any other known allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
  • You have a history of blood clots
  • You have experienced unusual vaginal bleeding after menopause
  • You have had uterus or breast cancer
  • You have a bleeding disorder
  • You have any liver, kidney, thyroid, or heart problems
  • You have asthma or other breathing problems
  • You have epilepsy
  • You have diabetes
  • You have endometriosis
  • You have lupus
  • You have high calcium levels in the blood
  • You will be on bed rest after a scheduled surgery
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, and may become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Duavee?

Side effects of the Duavee drug are typically mild but may include nausea, upset stomach, abdominal pain, muscle spasms, diarrhea, throat pain, neck pain, or dizziness. If any side effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice any new breast lumps, severe headaches, unusual vaginal bleeding, changes in speech or vision, or severe pain in your chest or legs. These are not all the possible side effects of Duavee; you should let your doctor know if you experience any side effects that bother you.

What if I forget to take a dose of Duavee?

Never take two doses of Duavee at the same time in an effort to catch up after a missed dose. In general, you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosing schedule.

How do I store Duavee?

Keep Duavee in its original packaging at room temperature (ideally between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit). If you have opened any of the foil pouches that the individual Duavee tablets come in, you will need to use the medication within 60 days. If the Duavee drug has expired or you no longer need it, talk to your pharmacist about how to properly dispose of the tablets.

What happens if I overdose on Duavee?

Duavee drug overdose can lead to side effects including dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, breast tenderness, and vaginal bleeding. If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately.

Warnings

Taking medications containing estrogen may increase your risk of developing uterus cancer. You should only take Duavee for the shortest effective duration, and if you are only taking this medication to reduce your risk of osteoporosis, you should talk to your doctor about other treatment options.

Brand Name

Duavee is a brand name medication, and there is currently no generic equivalent. As a result, the drug can be expensive without insurance coverage.
