Famotidine Information:

What is famotidine?

Famotidine is in a class of drugs called H2 blockers and works by decreasing the stomach’s acid production. Famotidine is used in the treatment of gastric ulcers and for other conditions resulting from the stomach producing too much acid. The over-the-counter version of this medication is used to relieve or prevent heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach. Since its approval, it has also been found to be useful for patients with damage to the stomach or intestines due to stress or trauma, patients with hives, and patients with pancreatic problems, and patients with stomach or intestinal ulcers from medications used to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

How do I take famotidine?

Prescription famotidine comes as a tablet and a liquid, both taken by mouth. Most patients take their dose once per day at bedtime or two to four times per day. Over-the-counter famotidine comes in tablet form, as a chewable tablet, or as a capsule, all of which are taken by mouth once or twice each day. For prevention purposes, famotidine is taken 15 to 60 minutes before ingesting the foods or liquids that lead to heartburn. If taking the liquid form, shake well for 5 to 10 seconds before each use to ensure the medicine is evenly mixed. If taking the tablets or capsule forms, swallow each does with a full glass of water. Chewable tablets should be thoroughly chewed before swallowing and taken with a full glass of water. Over-the-counter famotidine should be limited to two tablets in a 24-hour period and should not be taken longer than two weeks. If your symptoms last longer than two weeks, stop taking the over-the-counter famotidine drugs and call your doctor.

For prescription famotidine, if you are prescribed one dose per day you should take it at bedtime unless otherwise directed; two doses per day should be taken in the morning and at bedtime; several doses per day should be taken with meals and at bedtime for best results. Dosing of famotidine drugs will be different for different patients. If your dose is different than presented here, you should follow your doctor’s directions and ask questions on any instruction you do not understand.

Before taking famotidine, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to famotidine, cimetidine, nizatidine, ranitidine, or any other medications.
  • You are taking any prescription medications, nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, or any herbal products.
  • You have phenylketonuria (PKU).
  • You have trouble swallowing.
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or become pregnant while taking this medication.
  • You are breastfeeding or plan to breast feed.
  • You have kidney disease.
  • You have liver disease.
  • You have porphyria.
  • You have a weakened immune system.

What are the possible side effects of taking famotidine?

This list is not a complete list of famotidine side effects, and any changes which occur after taking famotidine should be discussed with your doctor. Some of the side effects which are severe or persist should be discussed with your healthcare provider includes headache, dizziness, constipation, diarrhea, or fussiness in babies who take famotidine. Other side effects for which you should immediately contact your doctor include hives, skin rash, itching, swelling of the face and other areas of the body or head, hoarseness, and difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Black, tarry stools or vomit that looks like coffee grounds could indicate a bleeding ulcer and should be immediately reported to your doctor. Some rare famotidine side effects include abdominal pain, back or leg pain, bleeding or crusting sores on lips, blistering or tenderness of the skin, changes in vision, confusion, coughing or difficulty swallowing, dark colored urine, dizziness, fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, fever and/or chills, flu-like symptoms, hives, joint pain, light colored stools, mood or mental changes including anxiety, agitation, or hallucinations, muscle cramps, nausea or vomiting, red or irritated eyes, shortness of breath, sore throat, white spots on lips or in mouth, tightness in the chest, unusual bleeding or bruising, wheezing, or yellow eyes or skin.

What if I forget to take a dose of famotidine?

If you miss a dose of famotidine, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose.

How do I store famotidine?

Famotidine should be stored in a tightly closed container at room temperature, away from heat and moisture, and out of direct light.  Do not allow the liquid famotidine to freeze. Keep this medication out of the reach of children, and discard any unused or outdated medicine. Your doctor or pharmacist can direct you as to the proper way to discard unused medication. Discard any unused famotidine liquid after 30 days.

What happens if I overdose on famotidine?

Should an overdose be suspected, contact your local poison control center. If the patient has collapsed or is not breathing, contact your local emergency services by dialing 911.

Warnings

Tell your doctor or health care professional if your condition does not improve or if it gets worse. Finish the full course of your prescription even if you feel better.

Do not take famotidine with aspirin, ibuprofen or any other anti-inflammatory medication, as these combinations can make your condition worsen. Do not smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol while taking famotidine, as these cause irritation to your stomach and can increase the time of healing for ulcers.
