Valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide is a combination of two medications used to help lower blood pressure in those with hypertension. Before taking valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to hydrochlorothiazide, valsartan, sulfa drugs or other medications;
• You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are nursing;

There have been several side effects associated with the taking of valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide, some more severe than others.  Less severe side effects include dizziness, blurred vision, back pain, cramps, coughing, loss of appetite, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting; excessive tiredness, muscle weakness, or joint pain; headache, rash, excessive thirst, and hair loss. If any of these symptoms persist or increase in severity, contact your doctor immediately.

Severe side effects include swelling of the face, eyes, throat, lips, tongue, or extremities; difficulty breathing or swallowing; hoarseness; peeling skin due to severe skin rash; sore throat and fever; weight gain; unusual bruising or bleeding. If you experience any of these, immediately contact your physician. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, stop taking it and contact your doctor immediately as it may injure or be fatal to a developing fetus.

What if I forget to take a dose of valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide?

If you forget to take your dose of valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next scheduled dosage, skip the missed one, and resume the normal routine. Do not take multiple doses to make up for the one missed.
