Ipratropium Information:

This medicine is an anticholinergic medicine used for maintenance treatment and prevention of bronchospasm (wheezing or difficulty breathing) associated with obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It can be used alone or in combination with other medicines. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. AN ADDITIONAL PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLET with detailed instructions for use is available with this medicine. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this information. TO USE THIS MEDICINE: Twist open the top of 1 unit-dose vial and squeeze the contents into the nebulizer reservoir. Connect the nebulizer reservoir to the mouthpiece or face mask. Connect the nebulizer to the compressor. Sit in a comfortable, upright position; place the mouthpiece in your mouth or put on the face mask and turn on the compressor. If a face mask is used, take care to avoid leakage around the mask to prevent direct contact with the eyes. Breathe as calmly, deeply, and evenly as possible until no more mist is formed in the nebulizer chamber (about 5 to 15 minutes). At this point, the treatment is finished. Clean the nebulizer (see manufacturer's instructions). IF YOUR DOCTOR HAS ALSO PRESCRIBED ALBUTEROL OR METAPROTERENOL FOR YOU, they can be mixed in the nebulizer with this medicine if used within 1 hour. Do NOT mix this medicine with any other medicines. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if it contains particles, is cloudy or discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C), away from heat, moisture, and light. Store unused vials in the foil pouch until you are ready to use a dose. Do not store in the bathroom. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and away from pets. USE THIS MEDICINE on a regular schedule as directed by your doctor to get the most benefit from it. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do NOT use 2 doses at once.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking other anticholinergic medicines (eg, benztropine, diphenhydramine). DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including eye problems (eg, glaucoma), an enlarged prostate, urinary blockage, difficulty urinating, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include back pain, bitter taste, cough, dizziness, dry mouth, flu-like symptoms, headache, indigestion, nausea, nose or throat irritation, runny or stuffy nose, sinus pain, or sore throat. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience difficult, frequent, or painful urination; eye pain or discomfort; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; new or worsening trouble breathing; severe or persistent dizziness; shortness of breath; swelling or soreness of the mouth or tongue; vision changes (eg, blurred vision, visual halos, seeing bright colors and lights); or wheezing. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing or swallowing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, throat, or tongue; or unusual hoarseness. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. IF YOU WILL BE USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, be sure to obtain necessary refills before your supply runs out. CHECK WITH YOUR PHARMACIST about how to dispose of unused medicine.
