Lupron Information:

What is Lupron?

Lupron works by inhibiting the secretion of gonadotropins. By decreasing the availability of gonadotropin, the body can’t produce as much testosterone or estradiol (estrogen). In addition to treating prostate cancer, leuprolide may also be used to treat other hormone-responsive cancers and conditions like endometriosis.

How do I take Lupron?

Lupron comes in the form of a solution to be injected under the skin, and it is usually injected once daily. You should frequently rotate the site of injection. Lupron also comes in an extended-release version (Lupron Depot) that only needs to be injected once every month or less. In this case, a medical professional will inject your medication.

Before taking Lupron, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Lupron. You or anyone in your family has osteoporosis.
• You have recently experience unusual vaginal bleeding.
• You have diabetes.
• You have heart disease or an irregular heartbeat.
• You drink a lot of alcohol or have smoked tobacco for a long period of time.
• You have ever suffered from depression.
• You have difficulty urinating or blood in your urine.
• You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
• You have low levels of potassium, calcium or magnesium.
• You are taking other prescription or nonprescription drugs including medications for irregular heartbeat, seizure medications, steroids or birth control pills.

What are the possible side effects of taking Lupron?

Lupron drug side effects include breast tenderness, shrinking testicles, increased perspiration, acne, trouble sleeping, joint or muscle pain, hot flashes, headache, upset stomach, loss of libido, decrease or total stop of menstrual bleeding, mood changes and depression. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, tell your doctor as soon as possible.

What if I forget to take a dose of Lupron?

This is not likely since this medication is usually given in a clinic by a medical professional. If you miss an appointment, reschedule with your provider.

How do I store Lupron?

Store vials of Lupron at a temperature below 77 degrees Fahrenheit and protect the medication from light. Keep vials and needles out of reach of children and pets. Ask your pharmacist how to properly dispose of needles and any unused medications.

What happens if I overdose on Lupron?

In clinical trials, 20mg of Lupron per day caused no adverse effects, so overdose is not likely. If you are experiencing extreme side effects and you think you may be taking too much, tell your doctor. If someone accidentally ingests Lupron, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
