Mometasone Furoate Information:

What is mometasone furoate?

Mometasone furoate is a generic corticosteroid that may be used to treat a variety of conditions causing inflammation. It works by reversing the activation of the inflammatory response and stimulating the secretion of anti-inflammatory proteins. It is commonly used in an inhaler to treat asthma, or topically as a cream or ointment to treat skin inflammation resulting from a variety of skin conditions. It may also be used in a nasal spray.

How do I take mometasone furoate?

If using mometasone furoate cream or ointment, apply a thin layer to clean skin in the affected area once per day unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Avoid getting mometasone furoate cream or ointment in your eyes, nose, or mouth.

If using a mometasone furoate inhaler, you will probably need to prime the inhaler first. Mometasone furoate inhalers may vary, so follow the instructions provided to you by your pharmacist. Write the date on your inhaler after removing it from the package. You should dispose of your inhaler after 45 days, even if you haven’t used all the doses. Twist the cap counterclockwise to remove it. This will prepare one dose of your medication and cause the dose counter to count down one dose. Exhale completely, then place the mouthpiece in your mouth and be sure not to block the ventilation holes on the sides. Breathe in deeply and quickly as you release one dose from the inhaler. Hold your breath for 10 seconds and then slowly exhale. Wipe the mouthpiece and replace the cap. Rinse your mouth with water. Do not swallow any excess medication that might have stayed in your mouth.

Before taking mometasone furoate, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to steroids or any of the ingredients in your mometasone furoate ointment, cream, or inhaler.
  • You’ve never had chickenpox or you haven’t been vaccinated against measles or other illnesses.
  • You have an infection.
  • You have or have ever had osteoporosis, cataracts or glaucoma.
  • You have liver disease.
  • You are pregnant or breast feeding.
  • You are taking any other medications, especially ketoconazole or other steroids.

What are the possible side effects of taking mometasone furoate?

Inhaled mometasone furoate may cause nausea, dry throat, headache, nose or throat irritation, indigestion, and loss of appetite. Topical mometasone furoate may cause itching or irritation at the site of application, acne, dryness, and skin infection. If you experience any strange or severe side effects such as allergic reaction or a worsening of your condition, contact your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of mometasone furoate?

If you miss a dose of mometasone furoate, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine.

How do I store mometasone furoate?

Store mometasone furoate in its container or packaging at a moderate room temperature. Throw away any opened mometasone furoate inhalers after 45 days.

What happens if I overdose on mometasone furoate?

Signs of overdose on inhaled mometasone furoate include extreme fatigue, weakness, bruising easily, and irregular menstruation.  If you think you are overdosing, contact your doctor at once. Topical overdose is not possible. Excessive use may result in exaggerated side effects. If someone accidently ingests mometasone furoate ointment or cream, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

Mometasone furoate inhalers are not meant for the treatment of an asthma attack. They are used to prevent attacks only. Corticosteroids may weaken your immune system and affect your body’s ability to fight infection on its own. Avoid sick people while undergoing treatment with mometasone furoate.
