Optivar Information:

What is Optivar?

Optivar is the brand name for the ophthalmic form of the antihistamine azelastine. Azelastine is also used in nasal spray. It works by stabilizing mast cells and blocking histamine, a substance produced by the body in response to allergens that causes inflammation and other allergy symptoms.

How do I take Optivar?

The regular dosage of Optivar is one drop in each affected eye twice daily. Follow your doctors dosing instructions. If you wear contact lenses, you must remove them before instilling Optivar. Wash your hands before each use. Tilt your head back and pull the lower eyelid down to make a space for the drop. Squeeze one drop into the space (or as many as your doctor recommends), and then close your eye for one or two minutes. Contacts may be reapplied after ten minutes.

Before taking Optivar, tell your doctor if:

· You are using any other eye medications or products.
· You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs.
· You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
· You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Optivar drops.

What are the possible side effects of taking Optivar?

Possible side effects from using Optivar include a mild burning or stinging sensation for a minute or two after the drops have been applied, temporarily blurred vision, headache and a bitter taste in the mouth. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, tell your doctor. Tell your doctor or a health professional immediately if you experience eye pain, an allergic reaction or trouble breathing.

What if I forget to take a dose of Optivar?

If you miss a dose of Optivar, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip that dose and continue on your regular schedule. There is no need to apply a double dose.

How do I store Optivar?

Store Optivar tightly closed in an upright position. Keep the bottle at a temperature between 36 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not allow the drops to freeze.

What happens if I overdose on Optivar?

There are no reports of Optivar drug overdose. Use this medication in the eyes only. If someone accidentally ingests Optivar, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

Optivar may temporarily blur your vision after applying it. Wait until this effect has passed before driving or operating machinery. Remove contact lenses before applying Optivar.
