Ortho Tri Cyclen Information:

What is Ortho Tri-Cyclen?

Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a triphasic oral contraceptive combination of the female hormones ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate. It protects against pregnancy by preventing ovulation as well as initiating changes to uterine lining and cervical mucus, thereby blocking fertilization and preventing an egg from attaching to the uterine wall. In some cases, it may be prescribed to treat acne in women fifteen and older.

How do I take Ortho Tri-Cyclen?

Ortho Tri-Cyclen is an oral contraceptive that is taken on a daily basis, no more than 24 hours apart. The first pill is taken on the first day of a menstrual period, or the first Sunday after the period begins. The date establishes the dosing pattern and the procedure for addressing missed dosages. When a pack is exhausted, start a new one the next day. The 28-day pack contains seven inactive pills that act as reminders; expect a menstrual period to begin when taking these seven. You may experience breakthrough bleeding during the first few months of using Ortho Tri-Cyclen; contact your doctor if the bleeding is heavy, does not stop, or if you have concerns or questions.

Before taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, have recently given birth, or are nursing a child
  • You are allergic to ethinyl estradiol, norgestimate, or any of the ingredients in Ortho Tri-Cyclen
  • You are taking or using other contraceptives
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins or supplements, especially St. John’s wort
  • You are taking anti-coagulants, anti-depressants, antibiotics, HIV-protease inhibitors, ACE inhibitors, NSAIDS, antifungals, medication to control seizures, oral steroids, diuretics, or thyroid medication
  • You are taking vitamin C, or potassium supplements
  • You are taking nefazodone, cyclosporine bosentan, atorvastatin, rifampin, modafinil, clofibrate, morphine, cimetidine, fluoxetine, danazol, heparin, verapamil, delavirdine, nefazodone, or diltiazem
  • You have, or have had, blood clots, thrombophilia, hypertension, coronary artery disease, a stroke, heart attack, chest pain, tachycardia or arrhythmia, or cerebrovascular disease
  • You have, or have had, diabetes, kidney or liver disease, liver tumors, seizures, adrenal problems, gall bladder disease, or migraines or severe headaches
  • You have, or have had, breast, cervical, uterine, or vaginal cancer, abnormal vaginal bleeding, or symptoms of jaundice
  • You have, or have had, asthma, fibrocystic breast disease, high cholesterol levels, or depression

What are the possible side effects of taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen. Less severe side effects include gastrointestinal problems (constipation, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, etc.), increased appetite, swollen gums, weight changes, dermatological problems (acne, brown or black patching) unusual hair growth, menstrual problems (changes in flow or spotting or bleeding between periods, painful or missed periods), tender or enlarged breast or a breast discharge, white vaginal discharge or vaginal swelling, irritation, redness, burning, or itching. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, blistering, itching, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, throat, or tongue, difficulty breathing or swallowing); bulging eyes; coughing blood; chest pain or heaviness; changes in urine color; depression, dizziness, vision problems, fainting, or extreme fatigue or malaise; fever; leg pain; light-colored stools; appetite loss; unusually heavy menstrual flow or a menstrual period lasting longer than seven days; vision loss, severe headache, stomach pain, or vomiting; speech difficulties; swelling of the limbs or extremities; unusual bleeding; weak or numb arms or legs; symptoms of jaundice.

What if I forget to take a dose of Ortho Tri-Cyclen?

If you forget to take one or more of the Ortho Tri-Cyclen pills, follow the instructions that came with the medication as the procedure depends on how many days were missed, where you were in the cycle, and when you first began taking the latest series. Consult your doctor for specific guidance. Continue to take the pills but use an alternate form of birth control in the interim until you are sure the risk of pregnancy has diminished. Do not exceed the prescribed number of pills or the frequency of dosage without a doctor’s guidance.

How do I store Ortho Tri-Cyclen?

Keep the Ortho Tri-Cyclen pills tightly sealed in their original package, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not remove a pill until you are ready to take it. Dispose of any unused or expired doses according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Ortho Tri-Cyclen?

If an overdose of Ortho Tri-Cyclen is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has vaginal bleeding, has stopped breathing, has lost consciousness, or is nauseous contact Emergency Services at 911.
