Pacerone Information:

What is Pacerone?

Pacerone is a brand-name medication containing amiodarone, an antiarrhythmic drug used to treat irregular heartbeat, particularly ventricular arrhythmias. It may also sometimes be used to treat atrial fibrillation. This medication is normally only used to treat patients who are suffering from life-threatening conditions. Amiodarone works by prolonging phase 3 of the cardiac action potential, the repolarization phase, making the heartbeat more regular. This medication is both an alpha and beta blocker.

How do I take Pacerone?

The dosage of Pacerone depends solely on the individual’s condition and the discretion of the physician. In many cases, Pacerone medication is given in large doses for 1-3 weeks in a hospital under the constant supervision of a medical staff. Then, the patient is released under maintenance therapy in smaller doses. Pacerone comes in the form of a tablet to be taken orally. If you are taking Pacerone at home, your doctor will likely prescribe one or two doses daily. Due to the serious side effects this medication may cause, follow your doctor’s instructions exactly. Your doctor will monitor you for side effects and regularly test the efficacy of the medication. Avoid exposure to sunlight and sun lamps while undergoing treatment with Pacerone, and do not drink grapefruit juice. It is advisable to carry an ID card or bracelet with you at all times that indicates your treatment with Pacerone.

Before taking Pacerone, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breast feeding.
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially St. John’s wort, antidepressants, blood thinners, diabetes medications, cholesterol medications, HIV protease inhibitors, narcotic pain medications, loratadine for allergies, anticonvulsants, blood pressure medications, dextromethorphan (found in cough suppressants), and any others.
  • You have lung disease or are experiencing any problems with your lungs or breathing.
  • You have been diagnosed with thyroid disease or abnormal thyroid function.
  • You have low potassium or low magnesium.
  • You have sick sinus syndrome.
  • You have liver disease.
  • You have abnormally low blood pressure or a slow heart rate.
  • You are allergic to amiodarone, iodine, or any of the other ingredients in this medication.
  • You are over the age of 65.
  • You have any problems with your eyes or vision.

What are the possible side effects of taking Pacerone?

Side effects from taking Pacerone include dizziness, constipation, nausea, vomiting, headache, loss of appetite, insomnia, and a warm or tingling sensation under the skin. More serious side effects that may occur from treatment with Pacerone include a worsening of your original heart condition, fainting or feeling faint, pounding heartbeat, blurred vision or vision loss, shortness of breath, excessive sweating, rapid weight gain or loss, the appearance of a goiter, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis. If you experience any signs of a serious side effect, contact your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of Pacerone?

If you miss a dose of Pacerone, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of Pacerone to compensate for a missed one.

How do I store Pacerone?

Keep your Pacerone medication tightly closed in an airtight container at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect this medication from exposure to light and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Pacerone?

Signs of overdose on Pacerone include nausea, blurred vision, fainting, and a slow heartbeat. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Pacerone, call 911 or go to the emergency room. Pacerone overdose can be fatal.

Warnings

Because of its toxicity, Pacerone medication should only be prescribed when other medications have failed. Pacerone may cause lung damage, liver damage, and can also affect thyroid hormone levels. This medication causes sensitivity to sunlight which can cause your skin to turn a bluish-gray color. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses and protective clothing if you must be outside.

Other brand names for Pacerone include Cordarone. The generic name is amiodarone. Print one of our Pacerone coupons to save up to 85% off the price in your local pharmacy when your fill your prescription.
