Propranolol HCL Information:

What is propranolol HCl?

Propranolol was the first effective beta blocker ever created for hypertension and angina pectoris. Sir James Black was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for this invention in 1988. Propranolol used to be a first-line treatment for hypertension, but newer beta blockers have taken its place. Propranolol HCl (hydrochloride) works by blocking all beta receptors while cardioselective beta blockers such as metoprolol only block beta-1 receptors, which are in the heart. So what is propranolol HCl used for today? It is still used for hypertension in patients without asthma or lung problems. It is also used to treat angina or chest pain, irregular heartbeat, and to help in recovery after a heart attack. Propranolol HCl may also be used to prevent migraines and to stop tremors. Due to its calming effect, this medication is sometimes utilized to help calm anxiety symptoms in those with phobias, such as social phobias or stage fright. Propranolol is being tested for efficacy in treating PTSD.

How do I take propranolol HCl?

Propranolol HCl usually comes as a tablet. It may also be taken as an oral solution for those who can’t swallow tablets. Your dosing instructions will depend on the condition you are treating and your individual requirements. Dosage frequency can vary from sporadically to treat phobias or up to four times per day to manage irregular heartbeat. Follow your doctor’s or pharmacist’s dosing instructions exactly. Liquid propranolol HCl may be mixed with water, juice, sodas, or even soft foods like applesauce.

Before taking propranolol HCl, tell your doctor if:

  • You have a lung disease or condition or suffer from breathing problems.
  • You smoke cigarettes.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have diabetes or low blood sugar.
  • You have liver or kidney disease.
  • You have another heart condition besides the one you might be taking propranolol to treat.
  • You are allergic to any medications.
  • You have an overactive thyroid.
  • You regularly or excessively drink alcohol.
  • You are taking other prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially migraine medications, other heart or blood pressure medications, antidepressants, medications for mental illness, pain relievers, and asthma medications.

What are the possible side effects of taking propranolol HCl?

Possible side effects from taking propranolol HCl include drowsiness, diarrhea, constipation, impotence, trouble sleeping, slight weight gain, nausea, and vomiting. Other more severe but rare side effects include slow and irregular heartbeat, excessive weight gain, feeling faint, nosebleeds, numbness or tingling sensations, depression, sore throat, fever, jaundice, stomach pain, swelling or fluid retention, shortness of breath, hallucinations, and chest pain. If you experience a rare or unusual side effect, call your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of propranolol HCl?

If you forget to take a dose of propranolol HCl, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue taking your medication on your normal schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.

How do I store propranolol HCl?

Store propranolol HCl tightly closed in a container at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect your medication from moisture and light. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on propranolol HCl?

Signs of overdose on propranolol HCl may include drowsiness, extremely low blood pressure, and slowed breathing. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on propranolol, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unresponsive or not breathing, call 911. Propranolol overdose may be treated with glucagon.
