Reglan Information:

What is Reglan?

Reglan is a dopamine antagonist and antiemetic medication that is used to treat gastroesophogeal reflux disease (GERD) and its effects and symptoms, including heartburn. Other Reglan uses include treatment of gastroparesis in those with diabetes, and in relieving the nausea and vomiting that accompanies chemotherapy. It works by increasing stomach and intestinal muscle activity to help with faster emptying of the stomach.

How do I take Reglan?

Because there are different Reglan uses, this drug may be administered either through injection or it can be taken orally in tablet form. If you are taking the oral dosage, follow the prescribed schedule, taking it on an empty stomach and no sooner than thirty minutes before meals. The frequency of dosing will vary according to the patient profile. For conditions requiring administration by injection, follow the schedule and procedure as prescribed by the doctor. Do not take more than the directed amount, and do not take Reglan for a period longer than what the physician prescribes.

  • You have, or have had, diabetes, asthma, cancer, hypertension, or seizures
  • You have, or have had, intestinal blockages or bleeding or a tearing to the stomach or intestinal walls

What are the possible side effects of taking Reglan?

Those who have been prescribed this medication have reported side effects. Less severe Reglan drug side effects include feelings of restlessness, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tenderness or swelling of the breasts, dizziness or drowsiness, changes to the menstrual cycle, and increased urination. However, if any of these side effects persist or worsen, contact your physician.

Serious Reglan side effects that require immediate medical attention include tremors of the extremities, unusual and uncontrollable facial movements or actions; problems with balance, walking; signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, face, or throat; difficulty breathing or swallowing); depression or thoughts of suicide; seizures or convulsions; jaundice; hallucinations (visual and aural); or a blank or mask-like facial expression.

What if I forget to take a dose of Reglan?

If you miss your regularly scheduled Reglan dose, regardless of how it is administered, take it as soon as you remember. However, if the time is near for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one, and resume the normal schedule. Do not take additional doses of this medication to make up for a missed one.

How do I store Reglan?

If you have been prescribed Reglan tablets, keep them tightly sealed in their original container away from extremes of heat and humidity and out of the reach of children. If you are taking the injectable solution, follow the instructions of your healthcare provider regarding safe storage. Dispose of all unused or expired dosages according to the instructions of your pharmacist. Dispose of used syringes according to local regulations.
