• What

SSD is used for treating and preventing bacterial infection in second- and third-degree burns. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. This medicine is a sulfonamide. It kills bacteria by working on the cell membrane and cell wall.

• How
• Use this medicine as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
• Wash your hands thoroughly before and after application of this medicine. Use a sterile-gloved hand to apply this medicine to a thickness of approximately 1/16 inch on all affected areas. Whenever necessary, reapply the cream to keep the affected areas covered at all times.
• To prevent or to clear up your infection completely, continue using this medicine for the full course of treatment even if your condition improves in a few days. Do not miss any doses.
• If you miss a dose of this medicine, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
• Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use this medicine.
• Precautions
• Some medical conditions may interact with this medicine. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:
• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you are allergic to sulfonamides (eg, sulfamethoxazole)
• if you have kidney or liver problems or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
• Side Effects
• All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects.
• Burning; hives; itching; rash; redness; skin discoloration.
• Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); difficulty urinating.

• Storage

Store this medicine at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children and away from pets.

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org), or emergency room immediately. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed.
