What is sulfasalazine?

Sulfasalazine is a drug that negates the effects of bodily substances that cause inflammation, tissue damage, and diarrhea in patients who suffer from ulcerative colitis. It can also help relieve inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis after other treatment methods have failed. This drug relieves the symptoms and pain associated with the diseases.

How do I take sulfasalazine?

Take this medication as prescribed following the completion of a full meal. Follow all directions provided by your doctor and written on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts than what is recommended.

The most common side effects of the use of sulfasalazine include nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, loss of appetite, headache, or low sperm count in men. Alert a medical professional at once if you notice severe nausea or vomiting, skin rash, little or no urination, painful urination, swelling in the feet or ankles, tiredness, shortness of breath, fever, sore throat, swelling in the face or tongue, burning in the eyes, or a red or purple skin rash with pain and blistering.

What if I forget to take a dose of sulfasalazine?

Take the dose that you missed as soon as you remember to take it. Skip the dose that you missed if it is nearly time for your next scheduled dose. Never take more than one dose at a time, even if you want to make up for a missed dose. 

How do I store sulfasalazine?

Keep sulfasalazine in a room that stays cool and dry. Avoid exposure to moisture and heat, which may compromise the efficacy of the drug.

What happens if I overdose on sulfasalazine?

If you overdose, you may experience some of the severe side effects associated with use of this drug. If you suspect you may have overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or seek help from a medical professional immediately.

Warnings

Do not use this medication if you suffer from porphyria, an intestinal blockage that may also appear in the bladder, or if you are allergic to aspirin, salicylates, or sulfa drugs. Use of this drug may weaken your immune system. It cannot be used to cure ulcerative colitis, only to ease the symptoms of the condition.
