Torsemide Information:

What is torsemide?

Torsemide is a diuretic medication or water pill that is mainly used to treat edema from heart failure. It may also be used to treat hypertension in smaller doses. Torsemide works in the kidneys and increases the rate of elimination of water, sodium, and chloride. This reduces water retention and stops edema. It may also work to treat hypertension by decreasing heart rate and relaxing blood vessels.

How do I take torsemide?

Torsemide comes as a tablet to take orally. It is usually taken once daily at the same time every day. The size of your dosage will depend on your condition. Most doses are between 5mg and 20mg daily. Follow instructions provided to you by your doctor or pharmacist. Your doctor may increase your dose over time until your condition is controlled.  Ask your doctor about following any dietary guidelines while taking torsemide such as increased potassium intake and/or a low-sodium diet.

Before taking torsemide, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have kidney or liver disease.
  • You are allergic to sulfa drugs or any of the ingredients in this medication.
  • You have diabetes.
  • You have gout.
  • You are taking other prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or herbal supplements, especially blood pressure medications, corticosteroids, lithium, digoxin, indomethacin, licorice, and ginseng.

What are the possible side effects of taking torsemide?

Possible side effects from taking torsemide include headache, dizziness, a change in sexual drive or performance, diarrhea, constipation, frequent urination, and thirst. Serious side effects include weakness, muscle pain, red or black stools, elevated heart rate, coughing up blood, vomiting, hearing loss and dehydration.  If you experience any of these side effects, call your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of torsemide?

If you miss a dose of torsemide, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take two consecutive doses of torsemide to make up for a missed one.

How do I store torsemide?

Store torsemide tightly closed in a container at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect your medication from moisture and light and keep it out of reach of children.

What happens if I overdose on torsemide?

There have been no reports of overdose on torsemide, but possible symptoms of overdose include dehydration, severely low blood pressure, hypokalemia, confusion, a ringing sound in the ears, unexplained bleeding, and seizures. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on torsemide, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is not responding, call 911.

Warnings

Ask your doctor about how much fluid you should drink daily to stay hydrated while taking torsemide. Also ask your doctor about drinking alcoholic beverages. Alcohol can increase the risk of dangerous side effects.
