Ursodiol Information:

What is ursodiol?

Ursodiol is a medication that may be used as an alternative to surgery for gallstones. It may also be used to prevent the formation of gallstones or to treat a type of liver disease called primary biliary cirrhosis. Ursodiol is a secondary bile acid that occurs naturally as a byproduct of intestinal bacteria metabolizing primary bile acids. Bile acids help regulate cholesterol by breaking down these fats in the digestive system. Ursodiol works by dissolving gallstones that are formed by cholesterol.

How do I take ursodiol?

Use our ursodiol coupons to reduce the cost when you fill your prescription in your pharmacy. Ursodiol comes as a tablet or a capsule to be taken orally. The dosage of this medication depends on your condition and your body weight. Follow instructions provided by your doctor. This medication can be prescribed to be taken 2-4 times a day and should ideally be taken with food unless otherwise specified by your doctor. Your doctor will conduct regular tests while you are taking ursodiol to ensure proper liver function and the dissolution of gallstones.

Before taking ursodiol, tell your doctor if:

  • You’ve ever had pancreas, liver, or gallbladder disease.
  • You have a biliary tract blockage.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have ascites or an accumulation of fluids in the abdomen.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in ursodiol.
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, including antacids, medications that contain estrogen, birth control pills, bile acid sequestrants such as cholestyramine, and cholesterol medications.

What are the possible side effects of taking ursodiol?

Possible side effects from taking ursodiol include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, indigestion, back pain, headache, and flu-like symptoms. If you experience a fever or pain when urinating, contact your doctor at once. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects, also call your doctor immediately.

What if I forget to take a dose of ursodiol?

If you miss a dose of ursodiol, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of ursodiol to compensate for a missed one.

How do I store ursodiol?

Store ursodiol tightly closed in a container at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect your medication from moisture and light.

What happens if I overdose on ursodiol?

There have been no reports of adverse effects from ursodiol overdose, as it is naturally produced in the body. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on ursodiol ingestion, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
