What is Viekira Pak?

Viekira Pak is a drug combination containing ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir and may be prescribed to treat infections of hepatitis C. Ombitasvir is an HCV-NS5A inhibitor that stops the spread of the hepatitis C virus in the body; paritaprevir is a protease inhibitor that decreases HCV levels; ritonavir is a protease inhibitor that helps increase the amounts of paritaprevir in the body to improve its effectiveness;  and dasabuvir, a non-nucleoside NS5B polymerase inhibitor, decreases the amount of HCV in the body.

How do I take Viekira Pak?

Each carton of Viekira Pak contains a 28-day supply of the combined medications. Doses are taken orally on a daily basis with food. Each daily dosing packet has two pink pills (containing ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir) and two beige pill (containing dasabuvir). The two pink pills and one of the beige pills are taken in the morning with food; the remaining dasabuvir pill (beige) is taken in the evening, also with food. The treatment program continues for twelve or twenty-four weeks, depending on the medical profile of the patient. Follow the instructions that accompanied the prescription and take all of the medication. The medications in the Viekira Pak control HCV but are not a cure; continue to take it even if you feel well.

• Precautions

Before taking Viekira Pak, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, dasabuvir or any of the ingredients in the Viekira Pak
• You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
• You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
• You have cirrhosis, other liver diseases, or a liver transplant
• You have HIV
• You have asthma or allergies
• You have anemia

What are the possible side effects of taking Viekira Pak?

Some people have reported side effects after taking the medications in the Viekira Pak. Less severe symptoms may include sleep difficulties; if this condition persists or worsens, contact your physician. Severe side effects requiring immediate Viekira Pak patient assistance include changes in stool color, disorientation, confusion, appetite loss, nausea, pain, swelling or discomfort in the abdominal area, reddening of the skin, tiredness, vomiting, weakness, or symptoms of jaundice.

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of Viekira Pak?

If you forget to take all or part of the medications in the Viekira Pak, use the following guidelines: if you forget to take the tablets containing ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir (the pink ones), take them with a meal as soon as you remember. However, if more than twelve hours have elapsed since the last dose, skip it and resume the regular schedule. If you missed the dose of dasabuvir (the beige pill), take it with a meal as soon as you remember unless more than six hours have elapsed, in which case you should skip it and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage or change the regimen to make up for any that were missed.

How do I store Viekira Pak?

Keep the pills in the Viekira Pak tightly sealed in their original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused pills according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on Viekira Pak?

If an overdose of the drugs in the Viekira Pak is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911 for Viekira Pak patient assistance.

Warnings

The medications in the Viekira Pak may cause severe liver problems or may alter the results of liver function blood tests. Do not use hormonal contraceptives containing ethinyl estradiol while taking these drugs. Viekira Pak will not prevent the spread of HCV; do not share toothbrushes, razors or needles or have unprotected sex while infected. If you or your partner can become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the most effective form of birth control to use.
