What is Zolpimist?

Zolpimist is the brand name for zolpidem, a GABA agonist sedative in an oral spray. As a central nervous depressant it is prescribed for the short-term treatment of insomnia, working by slowing brain activity so that the user can sleep.

How do I take Zolpimist?

Zolpimist should only be taken if at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep time is available. Before using the medication, prime the pump according to the package directions, and then spray Zolpimist directly into your mouth over your tongue. Do not take this medication for longer than prescribed. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens after using Zolpimist.

 

Before taking Zolpimist, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to zolpidem or any of the ingredients in Zolpimist
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • Your frequently consume alcohol
  • You have a lung disease, including asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, or other breathing conditions
  • You have kidney or liver disease,
  • You have myasthenia gravis
  • You have sleep apnea (including problems with snoring)
  • You have, or have had, seizures, a mental illness, or depression

What are the possible side effects of taking Zolpimist?

Some patients have reported side effects after taking Zolpimist, including appetite changes, gastrointestinal problems, unusual dreams, dizziness, balance problems, sleepiness, lightheadedness, red eyes, dry mouth or throat, joint pain; muscle cramps or pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, tinnitus, or bodily tremors. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider. You’re your doctor immediately if you have severe side effects, including participating in activities though not fully awake and not being able to remember them, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, chest pain, thoughts of suicide, or vision problems.

What if I forget to take a dose of Zolpimist?

Zolpimist is administered at bedtime and only on an as-needed basis, so missing a dose is not likely. Do not take a dose if the minimum seven to eight hour sleep requirements cannot be met. 

How do I store Zolpimist?

Keep Zolpimist upright and tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the medication to freeze. If you no longer need this medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of it.

What happens if I overdose on Zolpimist?

Symptoms of an overdose may include drowsiness, confusion, fainting, slowed heartbeat or breathing, or coma. If an overdose of Zolpimist is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has collapsed or stopped breathing, contact Emergency Services at 911. 

Warnings

Zolpimist may be habit-forming. This medication will make you drowsy or sleepy; do not drive or perform other activities that require alertness until its effects have passed. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Zolpimist. This medication may induce suicidal thoughts. Alcohol exacerbates the side effects of this drug. Some people have reported engaging in a range of activities, such as talking on the phone or driving, after taking Zolpimist and not recalling having done so.

 

Brand Names

Zolpimist is a brand name of the sedative zolpidem, which is also marketed under other brand names such as Intermezzo, Ambien, Ambien CR, and Edluar. These medications cannot be substituted for one another as their strengths and delivery methods are different.
