What is Adoxa?
Adoxa is the drug doxycycline, a tetracycline antibiotic prescribed to treat or prevent a number of bacterial infections, including urinary and respiratory tract infections, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease, bacterial STDs, acne and other skin infections, periodontal disease, pneumonia, and malaria. It works by killing the bacteria that cause disease. The generic form, doxycycline, is on the Essential Medicines list of the World Health Organization. This drug is ineffective against viral infections.
How do I take Adoxa?
Adoxa is dispensed as tablets or capsules that are taken orally with water. This medication may be taken with or without food and is typically taken once or twice a day, depending on the strength of the medication and the condition being treated. Continue taking this medication for the pull prescribed time even if you feel well.
Before taking Adoxa, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to doxycycline, tetracycline, minocycline, or any of the ingredients in the Adoxa medicine

Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, blurred vision, confusion, darkly colored urine or decreased urination, extreme fatigue or weakness, light-colored stools, appetite loss, reddened skin, severe headache, stomach pain, upset stomach, vomiting, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
What if I forget to take a dose of Adoxa?
If you forget a scheduled dose of your Adoxa medicine, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next one, skip it and return to the original schedule. Do not increase the number taken or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Adoxa?
Keep the Adoxa drug in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from heat, moisture, and light. Dispose of any expired or unused tablets or capsules according to the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Adoxa?
If it is believed that someone has taken an overdose of Adoxa, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Do not take Adoxa if you are pregnant; contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking this medication. This medication will decrease the effectiveness of certain oral contraceptives. Avoid prolonged or unnecessary exposure to sunlight while taking this medication. Adoxa should not be given to children less than eight years old. This medication should only be taken for verified bacterial infections.
