Advicor Information:
What is Advicor?
Advicor is a cholesterol-lowering medicine that contains a combination of two medications: extended-release niacin and lovastatin. Niacin, also known as vitamin B3 or nicotinic acid, helps to decrease LDL cholesterol as well as raise HDL or good cholesterol levels over time. Lovastatin is a statin medication that works by inhibiting a certain enzyme in the liver that plays an essential role in the production of cholesterol. The majority of the body’s cholesterol is manufactured within the body rather than being obtained from diet.
How do I take Advicor?
Advicor pills should be taken once daily before bedtime with a small snack. Don’t take this medication on an empty stomach. Advicor tablets should be swallowed whole and should not be broken, crushed or chewed. This destroys then extended-release mechanism. Your doctor will probably start you on a 500mg/20mg dosage and increase your dose overtime if necessary. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions.
