Albenza Information:

What is Albenza?

Albenza is an antiparasitic drug used to treat neurocysticercosis, a condition caused by the larval form of a certain type of tapeworm. It may also be used to treat certain other kinds of parasitic worm infections. It works by killing parasites.

How do I take Albenza?

Your Albenza dosage will depend on your condition, weight, and response to treatment. Follow your doctor’s dosage instructions carefully, and contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Take this medication for as long as your doctor prescribes it, even if symptoms of the infection subside.

Before taking Albenza, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to Albenza or have any other known allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications or supplements
  • You have a history of liver disease
  • You have a history of biliary tract problems
  • You have a blood or bone marrow disorder
  • You have a history of alcohol abuse
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Albenza?

Most people who take Albenza do not experience serious side effects; however, as a responsible patient it is important to be aware of the possible side effects. These may include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or temporary hair loss. If any of these symptoms last a long time or are particularly bothersome, tell your doctor. Notify your doctor immediately if you have severe stomach pain, jaundice, change in color or amount of urine, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual vision changes, fatigue, confusion, severe headaches, seizures, or an extremely stiff neck.

What if I forget to take a dose of Albenza?

Take the missed dose of Albenza as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and proceed with your normal dosage schedule.

How do I store Albenza?

Do not keep Albenza in your bathroom, as light and moisture will negatively affect it. Keep it in its original packaging at room temperature, out of reach of children and pets. If you need to dispose of expired or unused tablets, talk to your pharmacist about how to safely do so.

What happens if I overdose on Albenza?

Overdosing on Albenza can cause serious side effects. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, get emergency medical attention or call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.

Limit your alcohol consumption while using Albenza, as the combination of this medication and alcohol can put you at greater risk for liver problems. You should also avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while using this drug, because grapefruit can increase your chance of experiencing side effects.
