Alfuzosin Information:

What is alfuzosin?

Alfuzosin, an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker, is prescribed to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH), in men. It works by relaxing muscles in the prostate and bladder to allow for a better flow of urine.

How do I take alfuzosin?

Alfuzosin is distributed as an extended release tablet that is taken orally, once a day with liquid and right after a meal. Swallow the whole tablet; do not split, crush, or chew it. The exact dosing regimen will be determined by your doctor; follow exactly the instructions that accompanied the prescription. This medication does not cure BPH; continue taking it even if you feel well.

Before taking alfuzosin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to alfuzosin, any of the ingredients in the tablet, or any medications
  • You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You have a personal or family history of arrhythmia, tachycardia, or bradycardia
  • You have or have had angina or heart disease
  • You have or have had prostate cancer
  • You have kidney disease
  • You have experienced low blood pressure, fainting, or dizziness after taking any medication

What are the possible side effects of taking alfuzosin?

Side effects have been reported by some patients who have taken the alfuzosin drug. Mild symptoms such as constipation, decreased sexual ability, headache, heartburn, nausea, pain, stuffy or runny nose, stomach pain, fatigue, or a sore throat, fever, chills, cough and other signs of infection should be monitored if they appear; if they linger or worsen, contact your healthcare provider. Severe side effects such as signs of an allergic reaction, fainting, or chest pains require immediate medical attention.

What if I forget to take a dose of alfuzosin?

If you forget to take your dose of the alfuzosin medicine at the scheduled time, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next dose, skip the one missed and resume the original schedule. Do not take more than the prescribed amount or change the dosing pattern to make up for a missed dose.

How do I store alfuzosin?

Keep alfuzosin tablets at room temperature, tightly sealed in their original container and out of the reach of children. Bathroom storage is not recommended. Dispose of any expired or unused pills according to the directions of your doctor or pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on alfuzosin?

If you think someone has overdosed on the alfuzosin drug, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for assistance. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose may include blurred vision, dizziness, fainting, lightheadedness, and nausea.

Warnings

Women should not take alfuzosin; if you have taken this drug, especially if you are pregnant or nursing, contact your doctor immediately. Do not take the alfuzosin medicine on an empty stomach. This medication may cause orthostatic hypotension; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms or explosives until its effects are known.
