Alinia Information:

What is Alinia?

Alinia (nitazoxanide) is an antiprotazoal agent used to treat diarrhea caused by infections by the protozoa Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia. It works by halting the growth of these protozoa. Normally, if diarrhea has lasted 7 days or more, protozoa are suspected.

How do I take Alinia?

There are two forms of Alinia - tablets and oral solution. If you've been prescribed the tablets, it's normally 1 tablet by mouth with food every 12 hours.

If you're taking the oral solution, shake well before measuring out your dose. Use a medication measuring cup or spoon in order to ensure you get your entire dose.

Before taking Alinia, tell your doctor if:

• You’re taking any other drugs, medications, supplements, or vitamins, especially anticoagulants.
• You’re pregnant or breastfeeding or you plan to breastfeed.
• You cannot regularly eat when you need to take your medication.
• You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease.
• You have diabetes.
• You have or have a history of immune system disease or disorder, including HIV/AIDS

What are the possible side effects of taking Alinia?

Common Alinia drug side effects include: abdominal pain, headache, nausea and vomiting. If you experience these, do not stop taking your medication, but consult your doctor. If you experience any severe or unusual side effect, tell your doctor immediately. Seek immediate emergency medical assistance if you experience symptoms of allergic reaction, including difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

What if I forget to take a dose of Alinia?

You should never take extra Alinia medicine to make up for a missed dose, so if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Otherwise you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember it.

How do I store Alinia?

Store Alinia tablets at room temperature in the container they came in, tightly closed and away from excess moisture or heat. Keep the oral solution at room temperature and tightly closed. Once opened, the solution must be used within 7 days; after that it should be discarded.

What happens if I overdose on Alinia?

Unfortunately, the symptoms of Alinia drug overdose are unknown. If you suspect a possible overdose, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical assistance immediately.

Warnings

If you have diabetes and you're taking the oral solution, you will need to monitor your blood sugar levels more closely because the solution also contains a significant enough amount of sucrose. Always be sure that medical personnel can be informed you're taking this medication in emergency situations. If Alinia is prescribed for a child, be sure they get plenty of fluids, preferably in small, regular sips.

Call your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Do not take this medication for longer than instructed. If your diarrhea persists past your prescription, notify your doctor.

Brand Names

The generic name for Alinia is nitazoxanide, but this medicine is not available on the market right now. Currently, there are no other brand-name medications for it either, which drives the cost of Alinia up for patients. Take advantage of our free discount coupon and save 86% on Alinia prescriptions at your local pharmacy.
