What is Allopurinol?

Allopurinol is a generic drug that comes in tablet form to be taken by mouth as directed by your doctor. Allopurinol tablets come in strengths of 100 mg and 300 mg.

Allopurinol is a prescription drug that is used to treat kidney stones, gout, and high levels of uric acid that is caused by certain medications for the treatment of cancer. High levels of uric acid in the body can cause kidney stones or attacks of gout.

Allopurinol is classified as a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, and it works by decreasing the production of uric acid in the body.

How do I use Allopurinol?

Allopurinol tablets are usually prescribed to be taken once or twice a day as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended maintenance dose for the treatment of mild gout in adults is 200 mg to 300 mg once per day, with a maximum dose of 800 mg per day. Consult with your doctor for specific dosage and use information for this drug. 

Before using Allopurinol, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to Allopurinol or any other medications
  • You are taking any other medications, vitamins, or herbal or nutritional supplements

What if I forgot to use a dose of Allopurinol?

Take your missed dose of Allopurinol as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

How do I store Allopurinol?

Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.

What happens if I overdose on Allopurinol?

In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.
