Alprostadil Information:
What is alprostadil?
Alprostadil is a prostaglandin vasodilator prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction. It works by relaxing blood vessels to increase blood flow to the penis in order to achieve and maintain and erection. It may also be used with other medications to diagnose erectile dysfunction.
How do I take alprostadil?
Alprostadil is administered one of two ways. As a powder, it is mixed with an accompanying liquid for injection into the penis; as a transurethral suppository, or pellet, it is inserted into the urinary opening of the penis; there are no alprostadil pills. The injection should not be administered more than three times a week with at least 24 hours between each dose. The pellets should not be used more than twice in 24 hours. The initial dose of alprostadil will be administered in a doctor’s office in order to determine the correct dosage, demonstrate proper use, and to monitor for side effects.
Before taking alprostadil, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to alprostadil, other prostaglandins, or any of the ingredients in the medication
- You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have been advised to refrain from sexual activity
- You have, or have had, blood cell diseases or conditions including leukemia, sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, thrombocythemia, polycythemia
- You have conditions that affect the shape of your penis or a penile implant
- You have had, or there is a family history of heart failure or blood clots in the lungs
- You have recently undergone surgery

Those who take alprostadil may experience mild side effects, including back pain, bleeding or bruising at the administration site; headache; pains or aches in the penis, testicles, legs, or perineum; reddening of the redness of the penis; skin problems; vision problems; or a warm or burning sensation in the urinary opening of the penis. If these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Severe side effects may also occur and require immediate medical attention. These include signs of an allergic reaction, priapism, tenderness or unusual curving of the erect penis, nodules or hard areas on the penis, tachycardia, swollen leg veins, and fainting.
