Alrex Information:

What is Alrex?

Alrex is the brand name of the ophthalmic corticosteroid loteprednol in solution form, an adrenal glucocorticoid prescribed to treat swelling, itching, redness, or irritation of the eye(s) caused by seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, infection, surgery, or other conditions. It is administered through eye drops and is available only with a prescription.

How do I take Alrex?

Alrex is an ophthalmic solution that is administered as eye drops, at intervals recommended by a physician. To apply, thoroughly wash your hands and shake the container before removing the lid. Tilt back your head and pull down gently on the lower lid with a fingertip to create a receptacle to receive the drops. Squeeze out one drop into the pocket created, close the eyelid, and press gently on the inside corner of the eye for about sixty seconds to prevent the medication from draining into the tear duct. If the doctor has prescribed multiple drops of Alrex, wait five minutes between them. Do not touch the dropper or allow it to contact the eyes. If you are having difficulty using this product, ask your healthcare provider for assistance.

Before taking Alrex, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to loteprednol or any of the ingredients in Alrex
  • You are allergic to any medications
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You have glaucoma, cataracts, or herpes infections of the eyes
  • You have any type of bacterial or fungal eye infection

What are the possible side effects of taking Alrex?

Some patients have reported side effects after taking this medication. Less severe symptoms include a mild burning sensation in the eyes, red, dry, or itching eyes, watery eyes, headache, runny nose, sore throat, or light sensitivity. However, if any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for assistance.

Severe side effects that require immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, severe and persistent itching, rash, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, mouth, throat, and tongue. Other severe side effects include a new infection, severe burning, seeing halos around lights, and blurry or other vision problems.

What if I forget to take a dose of Alrex?

If you forget to apply the scheduled dose of Alrex, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next round of eye drops, skip the missed application and resume the normal schedule. Do not increase the amount applied to make up for a missed dose.

How do I store Alrex?

Keep Alrex tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow Alrex to freeze or exceed 90°F. Dispose of any unused or expired quantities according to the instructions of a pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Alrex?

If an overdose of Alrex is suspected, or if the medication has been ingested, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for assistance. However, if the individual has stopped breathing or lapsed into unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Warnings

Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Alrex. Do not use this medication if it has discolored or there are particles in the liquid. An eye checkup may be necessary after using the medication for ten days. Contact the doctor if there is no improvement after two days. Wait ten minutes after applying Alrex before using another type of eye drop. Do not use for longer than two weeks. Do not wear contact lenses while using this medication.
