Alsuma Information:

What is Alsuma?

Alsuma is the selective serotonin receptor agonist (SSRA) sumatriptan, prescribed to treat the symptoms of migraine and cluster headaches; it does not prevent these headaches or reduce their number. Alsuma works by blocking the release of natural substances that cause the symptoms of migraines, interrupting pain signals that are transmitted to the brain, and narrowing blood vessels in the brain.

How do I take Alsuma?

Alsuma is a solution that is injected subcutaneously using a prefilled auto-injection device at the first signs of a migraine headache; if symptoms improve but return after an hour or more, a second dose may be injected. Inject Alsuma into the upper arm or outer side of the thigh; do not inject this medication into a muscle or a vein or through clothing. Do not administer a second injection if symptoms fail improve after the first one without permission of your healthcare provider. It is recommended that you maintain a record of headaches and when Alsuma is injected.

Before taking Alsuma, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to sumatriptan or any of the ingredients in Alsuma
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking, or have taken within the 24-hours, any SSRAs or ergot-based medications
  • You are taking, or have taken within the past two weeks, an MAO-A inhibitor
  • You are taking NSAIDs (including aspirin, naproxen, and ibuprofen), acetaminophen, SNRIs, SSRIs, and antidepressants
  • You have, or have had, or there is a family history of angina, blood clots, arrhythmia, blood circulation problems, hypertension, heart disease, a stroke, a heart attack, or Raynaud's disease
  • You have, or have had, ischemic bowel disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, kidney disease, liver disease, or seizures
  • You have gone through menopause

What are the possible side effects of taking Alsuma?

Some people have reported side effects after taking Alsuma. Less severe symptoms include drowsiness, a feeling of warmth or flushing, flushing, muscle cramps, pain or redness at the injection site, a tingling feeling, upset stomach, or vomiting. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), bloody diarrhea, cold sweats, feeling faint; painful, burning, or tingling hands or feet; pain, tightness, pressure, or heaviness in chest, throat, neck, or jaw; blue or pale fingers or toes; seizures; shortness of breath; slow or difficult speech; sudden or severe stomach pain; sudden weight loss; tachycardia or arrhythmia; vision changes; vomiting; a weakened or numb arm or leg.

What if I forget to take a dose of Alsuma?

Alsuma is taken on an as needed basis. If your symptoms do not improve after injecting Alsuma or you need to use this medication to treat more than four migraines in a one month period, contact your doctor.

How do I store Alsuma?

Keep Alsuma tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow this medication to freeze. Dispose of any unused doses according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Alsuma?

If an overdose of Alsuma is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Alsuma. This medication may make your drowsy; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. If you are sexually active while taking Alsuma, use an effective form of birth control. Increased frequency of use or taking Alsuma for longer than the prescribed time can cause migraines to worsen or increase in frequency. Contact your doctor if you need to use this medication to treat more than four headaches in a month. Do not use the pre-filled injection device more than once.
