Apidra Solostar Information:
What is Apidra SoloSTAR?
Apidra SoloSTAR is insulin glulisine that comes in a SoloSTAR® quick-injector pen. Insulin glulisine is a fast and short-acting insulin, meaning it works quickly after injecting, but it does not work in the body for long. Your doctor may prescribe long-acting insulins or other medications along with Apidra.
How do I use Apidra SoloSTAR?
Wait until the Apidra SoloSTAR pen has reached room temperature before injecting insulin. Always wash your hands before using and check the expiration date on the pen and make sure the fluid inside is clear and colorless. It the solution is cloudy, bring it back to the pharmacist. Disinfect the tip of the pen with rubbing alcohol and then attach a new needle. Screw the needle in place or push it onto the pen (varies by model). Remove the inner cap from the needle. Test a dose of 2 units by moving the dial to 2 and holding the pen with the needle facing up until air bubbles rise to the top. Then press the injection button and make sure insulin comes out of the needle. The dose meter should go back to 0. Clean the injection site with alcohol. Injections should rotate between the thighs, abdomen and upper arms. Holding the pen straight, insert the needle under your skin, then press down on the injection button. Wait 10 seconds before releasing the button and removing the needle. Place the outer needle cap back on the needle and dispose of it properly. Put the pen cap back in place.
Before using Apidra SoloSTAR, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or you are breastfeeding.
- You have or have ever had nerve damage from diabetes or other illnesses.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Apidra.
- You have kidney or liver disease.
- You have thyroid disease or an over or underactive thyroid.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins or supplements, especially blood pressure medications, cholesterol medications, diuretics, antidepressants, hormonal contraceptives, other diabetes medications, antivirals, steroids, antibiotics, asthma medications and thyroid medications.
What are the possible side effects of using Apidra SoloSTAR?
Possible side effects from using Apidra SoloSTAR include irritation, pain or redness at the site of injection. Serious side effects that should be addressed immediately include muscle cramps, weakness, hypoglycemia, and irregular heartbeat. If you experience any other side effects not listed here, tell your doctor as soon as possible.
What if I forget to take a dose of Apidra SoloSTAR?
Apidra must be injected 15 minutes before or 20 minutes after eating. Be sure to talk to your doctor about what to do in case you miss this window. If you haven’t done this and you forgot your dose, call your doctor right away. Instructions depend on individual requirements. Never inject a double dose of Apidra to try to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Apidra SoloSTAR?
Store any unopened Apidra SoloSTAR pens in the refrigerator. Do not allow them to freeze. Once a pen is opened, it can be stored at room temperature, but must be protected from heat and direct light. Once opened, the pen must be discarded after 28 days. Keep SoloSTAR® pens out of reach of children and pets.
