Aricept Information:

What is Aricept?

Aricept (donepezil hydrochloride) is a reversible cholinesterase inhibitor. In people with dementia, especially with AD, the body doesn't have enough of a specific version of acetylcholine vital to the neurological process of reasoning and memory (acetylcholinesterase). Aricept works by preventing this enzyme from breaking down. Unfortunately, this can only slow the progression of AD and dementia, and cannot cure it. Aricept medication may have uses other than those discussed in this article.

How do I take Aricept?

There are two versions of Aricept - standard release or an orally disintegrating tablet (Aricept ODT); often they are prescribed as 1 pill 1 time each evening with a full glass (8 oz) of water.

For standard release Aricept, swallow the pill whole; do not crush, chew, cut, or break your pill prior to taking it as it will alter how quickly the drug is absorbed into your body. Aricept ODT needs to be placed under your tongue and allowed to disintegrate slowly, swallowing several times without swallowing the tablet; drink the whole glass of water once the pill is completely dissolved.

Before taking Aricept, tell your doctor if:

  • You have or have a history of heart disease or disorder, especially a heart rhythm disorder (e.g., sick sinus syndrome).
  • You have or have a history of prostate problems, including an enlarged prostate, or urination difficulties.
  • You have or have a history of a seizure disorder, including epilepsy.
  • You have COPD or another pulmonary disorder, including asthma.
  • You have or have a history of stomach ulcers.
  • You regularly have a problem with energy or insomnia.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed, as this medication will harm your infant.
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs, medications, supplements or vitamins, as this medication can interact with a number of substances, including belladonna, ulcer medications (e.g., Pamine), drugs for other gastrointestinal problems (e.g., Bentyl, Cantil), anticonvulsants, barbituate antiseizure drugs (e.g., Solfoton), antimuscarinics, quinine based antiarrhythmics, fungal based antibiotics, NSAIDs, and more.

What are the possible side effects of taking Aricept?

Some side effects are severe and require immediate emergency medical attention. These include: seizure, swelling in your face or lips, swelling in your tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, vomit that looks similar to coffee grounds, difficult or painful urination, and black, bloody or tarry stool.

More common side effects include: feeling tired, insomnia, muscle cramps, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea.

What if I forget to take a dose of Aricept?

If it is almost time for your next dose of Aricept, skip the missed dose. Otherwise, you can take your missed dose as soon as you remember it. Always keep to your regular dosing schedule and do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

How do I store Aricept?

Both versions of this medication should be stored at room temperature and away from excess moisture or heat (e.g., a bathroom). However, Aricept ODT should also be kept in its blister pack until you're ready to take a dose.

What happens if I overdose on Aricept?

Symptoms of an Aricept overdose include: seizure, blurred vision, fainting, feeling lightheaded, muscle weakness, shallow breathing, slowed heartbeat, drooling, severe nausea, vomiting.

If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate emergency medical attention.

Warnings

Aricept is not a cure for dementia or related diseases, such as Alzheimer's. It can only slow the progression of the disease.

If you need to have surgery, even dental surgery, tell your surgeon that you're taking this medication. You may need to stop taking it for a short time.

As Aricept can cause blurred vision and drowsiness, do not do potentially hazardous tasks (e.g., driving) until you know how your body will react.

You should not take this medication while pregnant or breastfeeding, as it will be harmful to your infant. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication.

Brand Names

While there is a generic for Aricept medication (donepezil), there aren't any other brand names for the drug currently on the market. As a specialty drug, the retail cost of Aricept can become a burden quickly. We offer assistance through a discount of as much as 85%.
