Belbuca Information:

What is Belbuca?

Belbuca is a medicated film that is place in the mouth to deliver a powerful dose of opioid-based pain medication. Once placed in the mouth, the main active ingredient, buprenorphine, delivers around-the-clock pain relief. Belbuca is only indicated for use in patients that require 24-hour pain relief, and it should not be used for short-term pain because it is highly addictive.

How do I take Belbuca?

Take the Belbuca film out of the package, place it directly against the inside of the check, hold for 5 seconds, and then release. Do not place the film too far back. The Belbuca film should dissolve after application, and you should not eat or drink for 30 minutes after applying the medication. Do not touch or move the film with your finger or tongue, and do not chew or swallow the film. Apply this film around the same time each day or as instructed by your doctor.

Before taking Belbuca, tell your doctor if:

  • You have a history of head injuries or seizures
  • You have heart rhythm problems
  • You have liver, kidney, or thyroid problems
  • You have pancreas or gallbladder problems
  • You have problems urinating
  • You have a history of drug abuse or addiction to alcohol
  • You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
  • You are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
  • You have any food or drug allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements

What are the possible side effects of taking Belbuca?

The possible side effects associated with taking medications like Belbuca include: nausea, constipation, headache, vomiting, dizziness and sleepiness. Contact your doctor or call 911 if right away if you experience difficulty breathing or a severe skin reaction.

What if I forget to take a dose of Belbuca?

If you forget to take a dose of Belbuca and it’s more than 12 hours past your normal dosing time, skip the dose and take your next scheduled dose at the usual time. Do not take more Belbuca than is prescribed to you, as this may cause severe life-threatening reactions.

How do I store Belbuca?

Store Belbuca in a room with a temperature between 68 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not expose this medication to extreme heat, cold, or moisture as this may change the composition of the drug agents in the film.

What happens if I overdose on Belbuca?

An overdose on Belbuca may cause symptoms like difficulty breathing, fast or irregular heartbeat; chest pain; swelling of the face, tongue, and throat; extreme drowsiness; and lightheadedness. Contact local emergency services at 911 or Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if you experience any severe symptoms after a Belbuca overdose.

Warnings

Belbuca is highly addictive and should not be taken by patients with a history of substance abuse. Do not take Belbuca if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Belbuca should only be taken by patients who require around-the-clock pain relief and should not be used for short-term pain associated with surgery or other temporary pain conditions.
