What is Bisacodyl?
Bisacodyl is a generic drug known as a stimulant laxative and it is usually used to treat constipation. Bisacodyl may also be used to empty the bowels before a bowel examination, surgery, colonoscopy, x-ray, or other medical procedures.
Bisacodyl comes in tablet form and it promotes bowel movement by increasing the movement of the intestines.
How do I use Bisacodyl?
Bisacodyl comes in tablet form to be taken orally. This medication typically causes a bowel movement 6 to 12 hours after it is taken. Take Bisacodyl as directed by your doctor and do not take it more than once a day for more than 1 week unless otherwise instructed.
Before using bisacodyl, tell your doctor if:

you are allergic to bisacodyl

you are allergic to any other medications

you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications

you are taking vitamins, herbal products, or nutritional supplements

you have stomach pain

You have nausea or vomiting

You have a sudden change in bowel movements that lasts for more than 2 weeks

you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

you are 65 years of age or older, as bisacodyl is not as safe for older adults to take as other medications that can be used
Additional precautions:
- Wait at least 1 hour before taking bisacodyl if you are currently taking antacids.
What are the possible side effects of using Bisacodyl?
Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:

feel faint
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience rectal bleeding while using Bisacodyl.
What if I forget to use a dose of Bisacodyl?
Bisacodyl is typically taken as needed. If your doctor has prescribed that you take it at specific times, take it once you remember the missed dose. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take 2 doses of Bisacodyl.
How do I store Bisacodyl?
Store this medication securely in the container in which it came, at room temperature. Keep away from excess moisture or heat. Keep out of reach of children. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.
What happens if I overdose on Bisacodyl?
In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention.
Warnings
Frequent or long-term use of bisacodyl may make you dependent on laxatives. It may also cause your bowels to no longer function normally.
If you do not have a regular bowel movement after taking bisacodyl, do not take any more medication and contact your doctor.
