Key Differences between Levitra, Cialis & Viagra

Erectile-dysfunction-pills

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common malady that affects a number of adult men in the United States. According to the Harvard Men’s Health Watch, about half of men ages 40 to 70 have some sort of erectile dysfunction and one in 10 report a complete inability to achieve an erection. While a proper diet and exercise are two ways to combat erectile dysfunction, many men are turning to PDE5 inhibitors like Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis to treat this. These erectile dysfunction medications have proven to be effective in 60 to 70 percent of men.

PDE5 inhibitors are ED drugs used to affect the physiology of the penis. When ingested, they block an enzyme called PDE5, which is an enzyme that breaks down the erection-producing chemical cyclic guanosine monophosphate. These inhibitors allow blood vessels in the penis to dilate and fill with blood. Viagra was the first PDE5 inhibitor to be approved by the FDA in 1998, and both Levitra (vardenafil) and Cialis (tadalafil) followed suit in 2003. While these erectile dysfunction drugs are proven to improve a patient’s erectile dysfunction symptoms, some of the key differences between the three drugs include how quickly they work, how long the effects last, and their timing.

Viagra
As stated before, Viagra has been on the market the longest, having been approved in 1998. Compared to the other two PDE5 inhibitors, it takes longer for the drug to begin to work in the body, with an average onset time of 30-60 minutes. Viagra is similar to Levitra in that both have lasting effects of 4-5 hours. For Viagra to have the maximum effect, you must take the pill on an empty stomach. A diet consisting of high fat foods can interfere with the desired outcomes of Viagra, which contrasts heavily with both Levitra and Cialis. Viagra has several advantages over other erectile dysfunction medications: it can be taken orally, has been proven effective in over 70% of males who take the medicine, and compared to other PDE5 inhibitors, it has very few side effects.

Cialis
While Viagra has proven effective for many patients who take it, sometimes the effects are not long-lasting. In some cases, Viagra does not work well for sufferers of erectile dsyfunction. While Cialis takes a similar time to facilitate producing an erection, the drug’s effect lasts six times longer compared to Viagra. Cialis’ extended half-life means the drug can stay in a user’s blood for up to 17.5 hours. Cialis also has a once daily pill, which can keep a steady supply of the drug in a patient’s bloodstream, allowing a user the opportunity to not have to specifically plan to take medication for sexual activity. However, while the drug produces long-lasting effects, there are some side effects that occur from taking the drug. Cialis can produce back pain, muscle aches, headaches, an upset stomach or a runny nose.

Levitra
Levitra is the least popular of the three ED drugs mentioned here, but it can actually be more effective than both Viagra and Cialis. Levitra is almost ten times more biologically potent than Cialis, which means a male can consume a lower dose to facilitate an erection. Levitra can also take less time to produce effects in your body than Cialis or Viagra, with effects taking place anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. Levitra lasts from 4-5 hours. Side effects associated with Levitra include changes in vision, headaches, upset stomach, and stuffy noses.
