Ways to Treat Erectile Dysfunction

Viagra

When a man is unable to get or maintain an erection during sexual intercourse, this is known as Erectile Dysfunction (ED). This problem can be attributed as a symptom of a number of conditions both physical and psychological; it is often referred to as impotence. It is important to note many men are able to find relief for their symptoms.

Anyone who thinks they are suffering from ED should talk with their physician for possible relief or treatment. Treatment options vary, dependent on the ultimate cause of the problem. Remember, erectile dysfunction can be a side-effect for individuals suffering from diseases such as Hypertension, Depression, Diabetes, and more.

The first step in any treatment plan should be focusing on understanding the ultimate cause of this medical condition. Because it is often a symptom of a larger underlying problem, you should discuss any recent changes or other symptoms you have experienced. Certain medications and treatments for other conditions, such as sleeping pills, antidepressants, or heart medications can exacerbate the problem. Open communication with your care provider will help determine the course of treatment that is best for your case.

So, what are the treatment options? Due to the high number of men who are faced with ED, the condition has been highly studied, and the treatment options continue to grow. From assistive devices to homeopathic treatments, there are endless options that will provide relief.

What kind of medications are available?

For many, medication will be the fastest form of relief. It is something to consider in addition to lifestyle changes (addressed further below):

  • Tadalafil (more commonly known as Cialis): Cialis is used most commonly in the treatment for ED. This particular drug lasts for around 36 hours, giving patients a longer window of effectiveness versus other medicinal options. Men with liver or kidney problems may face a higher risk of drug interaction.
  • Sildenafil (Viagra): Viagra is a common Cialis alternative because it has a slightly higher rate of effectiveness, although its effective window is shorter at around 4-5 hours. The rate of effectiveness can be diminished if taken after food.
  • Viagra alternative: Additional medication options include Avanafil (known as Stendra) and Vardenafil (also known as Levitra or Staxyn).
  • Take caution: medicinal options should be fully discussed with your physician as drug interactions can cause further complications or worsen your dysfunction. These medications should not be taken by anyone who is taking nitrates (such as nitroglycerin) or any medication for chest pain.

What are the surgical options?

Surgery is often considered a high-risk, and many who suffer from ED will want to explore alternative options first. However, the two most likely options for a surgical remedy are:

  • Vascular Reconstruction surgery: this is typically reserved only for patients whose ED stems from an injury to the penis. These surgeries are not guaranteed, and many doctors prefer to explore alternative solutions before approaching reconstruction.
  • Malleable or Inflatable Implant: Another surgical option is the implantation of a malleable or inflatable device placed within the penis. This implantation option is typically reserved for men whose condition has a defined medical prognosis that is not eased by the use of medical treatments.

Can ED be treated without surgery? (Yes!)

The use of an assistive device is something to be considered if surgery is not an appropriate option for your particular ED symptoms.

VCD:

Many men who suffer from erectile dysfunction can find relief with the assistance of a Vacuum Constriction Device (VCD). The device is made up of an acrylic cylinder with an attachable pump that can be placed over the penis and used to create a vacuum stimulates blood flow. The use of a constriction ring, or band, is placed at the base of the penis to help maintain the erection.

Note, this type of device can diminish sensation over time.

Are there non-medical treatment options?

Yes! There are a number of homeopathic treatment options available for those suffering from erectile dysfunction. These treatment options can also be taken in addition to the above measures to help diminish overall complications from ED:

Exercise: Exercise that focuses on a cardio regimen has been shown to help decrease the effects of ED over time. Cardio based exercise is crucial in taking care of conditions such as Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) and Anxiety or other mental health illnesses.

Lifestyle changes: Similar to exercise, general lifestyle changes can assist in the overall treatment plan for a prognosis of ED. These changes would include a healthier diet, limiting alcohol intake, and rest.

Ginseng: Ginseng has been shown to help increase sexual function in men who are suffering from ED. Users should be careful as it is only meant to be used short-term. Be aware that Ginseng has been known to cause Insomnia as the main side-effect, which over time can lead to further sexual function problems.

Vitamin D: Studies have shown that men suffering from ED that has been caused by an injury often exhibit symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency. This deficiency can affect your bones, calcium intake, and cause overall muscle weakness. While not a cure-all, Vitamin D supplements should be taken into account with any lifestyle changes in order to ensure overall health.

Acupuncture: Researchers are at odds with whether an Acupuncture therapy program has positive impacts on ED. However, there have been studies that show Acupuncture has a strong positive impact on the improvement of blood circulation which can lead to relief for some ED sufferers. Acupuncture has also been attributed with relieving anxiety, depression, and other mental health illnesses which can lead to an overall healthier life.

The takeaway:

Over time many patients report that their ED can change over time, specifically it can worsen with age. Treatment options may fluctuate in overall effectiveness in time, so you should continually monitor any changes in your health and discuss it with your physician for continuous, comprehensive treatment.
