Boric Acid Information:

What is boric acid?

Boric acid may sound dangerous as it can be found in insecticides. It can be dangerous to humans and animals if it is ingested in large quantities. Boric acid is a naturally occurring substance, and it has been used by humans for many years for cleaning, food preservation and other useful purposes. Boric acid is safe for topical treatment, and it is sometimes often diluted and used in an ophthalmic solution to relieve eye irritation from pollutants and chemicals. Topical uses for boric acid include the treatment of fungal or bacterial infections on the skin. Some forms of boric acid medicine may also be used vaginally to treat yeast infections. Additionally, boric acid may be applied as an antiseptic to treat burns or cuts.

How do I take boric acid?

Boric acid eye wash comes with a sterile eye wash cup. Fill the cup halfway with boric acid solution and bend your head down slightly bringing the cup to your eye. Press the cup tightly around the eye to create a seal. Next, tilt your head back and open your eye. Move your eye back and forth to ensure that the solution cleanses your eye completely. Then remove the cup as you stand over a sink so that solution splashes into the sink. Repeat in the other eye as needed. Pat your face with a towel to remove any excess solution.

To treat recurrent yeast infections, boric acid capsules or suppositories may be inserted into the vagina once per day in the evenings for seven days. There may be other formulations of boric acid medicine in powders or creams to treat different conditions. Follow instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist.

Before taking boric acid, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breast feeding.
  • You have breast cancer, ovarian cancer or any cancers of the female reproductive system.
  • You have endometriosis or a condition that is affected by estrogen.
  • You have kidney disease or any kidney problems.
  • You are taking any medications or supplements, especially estrogen or magnesium.

What are the possible side effects of taking boric acid?

When boric acid is used topically and in the recommended doses, it isn’t likely to cause side effects.  Some minor side effects may include a slight burning sensation when applied and skin irritation. If you use too much boric acid, you may experience inflammation, peeling skin, nausea and vomiting. With chronic poisoning you may experience hair loss, dermatitis, weakness, pain, anemia and seizures.

What if I forget to take a dose of boric acid?

If you forget to take a dose of boric acid, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How do I store boric acid?

Store boric acid medicine in a cool, dry place. Be sure to keep this medicine tightly closed in its container and out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on boric acid?

If you experience signs of skin irritation, see your doctor immediately. If someone swallows boric acid, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222, or if the victim is displaying serious symptoms, call 911.

Warnings

Boric acid is for topical use only and can be toxic if ingested. It can also be toxic if it is used excessively on the skin. It should not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
