What is buprenorphine/naloxone?

Buprenorphine/naloxone is an oral medication that treats adults 18 years of age or older with opiate abuse. The active ingredients in buprenorphine/naloxone work by biding to the receptors in the brain, blocking the effects of opiates like euphoria. Patients can become addicted to buprenorphine/naloxone if not taken as directed.

 

How do I take buprenorphine/naloxone?

Patients should take a Buprenorphine/naloxone once a day with meals.  Do not mix buprenorphine/naloxone with alcohol or take more than the recommended dose set by your doctor. 

Before taking buprenorphine/naloxone, tell your doctor if:

  • You have liver or kidney problems
  • You have trouble breathing or lung problems
  • You have an enlarged prostate
  • You have a head injury or brain problem
  • You have problems urinating
  • You have a curve in your spine
  • You have gallbladder problems
  • You have adrenal gland problems
  • You have Addison’s disease
  • You have low thyroid
  • You have a history of alcoholism
  • You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
  • You are breastfeeding, or plan to breastfeed

What are the possible side effects of buprenorphine/naloxone?

Some of the most common side effects patients experience while taking buprenorphine/naloxone include nausea, vomiting, drug withdrawal syndrome, headache, sweating, numb mouth, constipation, swollen and/or painful tongue lightheadedness, irregular heartbeat, insomnia, blurred vision, back pain, fainting dizziness, and sleepiness. Take buprenorphine/naloxone as directed to avoid these possible adverse effects. 

What if I forget to take a dose of buprenorphine/naloxone?

If you miss a dose, skip it till the next scheduled dose. It is important to never take double the recommended dose of Buprenorphine/naloxone as it may cause severe adverse effects. 

How do I store buprenorphine/naloxone?

Store buprenorphine/naloxone in a room with a temperature around 68°F to 77°F. To avoid changing the chemical composition of the medication, avoid storing in direct sunlight or in spaces with moisture.

What happens if I overdose on buprenorphine/naloxone?

Contact Poison Control at 1800-222-1222 or 911 if you overdose on buprenorphine/naloxone and you feel sleepy and uncoordinated, have blurred vision, slurred speech, cannot think well or clearly, or have slowed reflexes and breathing. 

Warnings

Buprenorphine/naloxone is highly addictive, and patients who take this medication risk developing an opioid dependency if it is not taken as directed. Women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should not take buprenorphine/naloxone as it can kill the unborn baby. Women who are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed should not take buprenorphine/naloxone.
