What is butalbital/acetaminophen/caffeine?
Butalbital acetaminophen and caffeine is a combination drug used to treat pain. It is most commonly prescribed to reduce or eliminate pain derived from tension headaches, migraines, and muscle contraction headaches. This medication contains 50mg of butalbital. Butalbital is a barbiturate drug and a central nervous system depressant that works by acting on GABA receptors. It reduces pain because it has a numbing effect. Barbiturates are addictive drugs, and this mediation should be used with caution by anyone prone to addiction. This medication also includes 300-325 mg of acetaminophen, commonly known as Tylenol. Acetaminophen works to reduce pain by inhibiting the COX enzyme and acting as a mild NSAID. Lastly, 40mg of caffeine is included because it gives a small boost to the effectiveness of pain medications like acetaminophen.
How do I take butalbital/acetaminophen/caffeine?
Butalbital acetaminophen and caffeine comes as a capsule or tablet to be taken orally with a glass of water. Take this medication as needed no more than every four hours. Do not exceed six doses in one day. This medication may be taken with food if you have a sensitive stomach to prevent nausea. If you feel like you need to take this pain reliever more than six times a day, talk to your doctor.
Before taking butalbital/acetaminophen/caffeine, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to acetaminophen butalbital and caffeine, or any of the other ingredients in this medication.

What if I forget to take a dose of butalbital/acetaminophen/caffeine?
If you miss a dose of acetaminophen caffeine butalbital, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Then wait four hours before taking your next dose. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.
