Cefpodoxime Proxetil Information:
Cefpodoxime proxetil is a pet medication used to treat bacterial skin infections, bladder and respiratory infections, and soft tissue infections. It is an antibiotic and will not treat parasites or viral infections.
Follow your vet’s instructions. The usual instructions for dogs are 2.3-4.5mg of the medication per pound of your dog’s weight, given by mouth, once daily for 5-7 days, or 2-3mg once symptoms stop, up to a maximum of 28 days. For cats, the typical dose is 2.27mg per pound given by mouth every 12 hours or 4.45mg per pound once daily.
Before administering cefpodoxime proxetil, tell your vet if:
· Your dog or cat is pregnant or lactating
· Your pet is allergic to cephalosporin or penicillin
· Your pet has seizures or epilepsy
· Your pet has kidney disease
Possible side effects include lack of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Dogs may experience drooling, rashes and excitability, while cats may also experience vomiting, rashes, and a high fever. Contact your veterinarian if you’re concerned about your pet.
If you forgot to administer a dose of cefpodoxime proxetil to your pet, give it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to time for the next scheduled dose, you may skip the dose. Do not give two doses at once.
You should store this medication at room temperature and be sure to close the cap tightly after use.
If you suspect an overdose on cefpodoxime proxetil, contact your veterinarian, pet hospital, or emergency vet clinic immediately. The number for the Pet Poison Helpline is 855-213-6680. Symptoms of overdose include vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, and bruising.
Warnings
This medication should not be administered to nursing or pregnant pets, or to those who are allergic to penicillin or other similar allergies.
