Cellcept Information:

What is CellCept?

CellCept is an immunosuppressant drug used to keep the body’s immune system from attacking a liver, kidney, or heart transplant. It works by reducing your immune system activity. Because decreasing your immune system activity also increases your susceptibility to infections, this medication is only administered under close medical supervision.

How do I take CellCept?

If you are getting the injection form of CellCept, your doctor or another healthcare provider will inject the drug into a vein. If you are taking the oral form, you should swallow the capsule or tablet whole at least one hour before or two hours after eating. Your exact dosage will depend on your condition, so follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. You will need to undergo medical tests throughout your treatment to make sure the CellCept drug is not having negative effects.

Before taking CellCept, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication or you have any other allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
  • You have a stomach or intestinal disorder (e.g. a stomach ulcer)
  • You have any kind of infection (bacterial, viral, or fungal)
  • You have an inherited enzyme deficiency
  • You have kidney or liver disease
  • You have a history or family history of any type of cancer
  • You are breastfeeding or pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking CellCept?

Because CellCept weakens your immune system, it is important to recognize signs of an infection—such as a fever, wound on the skin, persistent sore throat, night sweats, difficulty urinating, and vision changes—and to tell your doctor if you experience any of them. Other possible side effects of the CellCept drug include nausea, vomiting, constipation, gas, tremor, loss of appetite, or difficulty sleeping. These are usually not a cause for concern, but tell your doctor if any of these side effects last a long time or become bothersome. Contact your doctor right away if you have any rare but serious side effects, including an irregular heart rhythm, easy bleeding or bruising, unusual mood changes, swelling of the feet or ankles, change in your normal amount of urine, or weakness on one side of the body. Get emergency medical attention in the unlikely event that you have severe chest or abdominal pain, dark-colored vomit or stools, or difficulty breathing.

What if I forget to take a dose of CellCept?

Take the forgotten dose of CellCept as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and resume your regular dosage schedule. Never double your dose to catch up.

How do I store CellCept?

Always keep your prescription medications out of reach of children and pets. Store CellCept at room temperature, away from moisture and bright light. If you no longer need this medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of it.

What happens if I overdose on CellCept?

If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on CellCept, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away.

Warnings

CellCept can cause birth defects and miscarriages and should only be used during pregnancy when absolutely necessary. If you are a woman of childbearing age and you need this medication, talk to your doctor about effective birth control methods. CellCept can make hormonal birth control less effective.

Because your immune system will be weakened while taking CellCept, avoid coming into contact with anyone who has an infection. Do not get any live vaccinations (such as a flu vaccine), as they may not protect you from the infection.

CellCept may increase your risk for skin cancer, so avoid prolonged sun exposure and tanning beds. Always wear protective clothing and sunscreen when you do need to be outside.

Brand Name

CellCept is a brand name drug. It is also available as the generic mycophenolate and is typically somewhat less expensive in this form. If you need help paying for either the brand name or generic form, be sure to request a prescription savings card or claim a coupon from HelpRx.
