Chlorthalidone Information:

What is chlorthalidone?

Chlorthalidone is a diuretic. It works by increasing the amount of urine passed through the body, causing it to lose excess salt and water. Chlorthalidone reduces extra salt and water in the body that is brought on by conditions like heart failure, liver disease, and kidney disease. It helps to decrease swelling referred to as edema and breathing problems brought on by fluid in the lungs. Chlorthalidone also helps relax blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily. It is used to treat high blood pressure and edema, also known as the swelling of tissues in the body. Chlorthalidone has also been used to prevent kidney stones in patients with high levels of calcium in their blood. Additionally, this medication can be used to treat diabetes insipidus and certain electrolyte upsets.

How do I take chlorthalidone?

Chlorthalidone comes in tablet form and should be taken orally. Depending on how it is prescribed, it typically is taken once a day or every other day, always after a meal, preferably in the morning post-breakfast. Taking it in the morning helps avoid having to get up and go to the bathroom during the night. Take chlorthalidone exactly as directed by your doctor. Never take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. The medication should be taken at the same time every day.

Note that if you also take other drugs to lower cholesterol, such as cholestyramine or colestipol, take any chlorthalidone dose at least 2 hours before or at least 4 hours after those particular medications.

  • You are breast feeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking chlorthalidone?

Report the following symptoms to your doctor immediately if they appear:  muscle weakness, dizziness, cramps, thirst, stomach pain, upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, headache, hair loss, sore throat with fever, unusual bleeding or bruising, skin rash, peeling skin, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

What if I forget to take a dose of chlorthalidone?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of your next dose, skip the missed one and continue the normal dosing schedule. Do not take double of a dose in order to make up for a missed one.
