Clobetasol Propionate Information:

What is clobetasol propionate?

Clobetasol propionate is a topical corticosteroid medication used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It is a highly potent corticosteroid and is used to treat skin problems resulting from multiple auto immune diseases. It is a first line treatment for GVHD which occurs after a skin transplant when the immune system attacks the foreign tissue that was transplanted. Like most corticosteroids, clobetasol propionate works by stopping the inflammatory response of the immune system.

How do I take clobetasol propionate?

Clobetasol propionate comes as a foam, spray, cream, gel, ointment, or shampoo.  If applying a spray, gel, cream, or ointment to the skin, wash and dry the affected area and your hands before apply the medication. Cover the area with a thin layer of medication and rub it in gently. Allow the medication to dry before covering it with clothing. Do not wrap or bandage the area unless specified by your doctor. If using the clobetasol propionate shampoo to treat the scalp, part your hair to expose the affected area. Apply the shampoo to the affected area only on your dry scalp and massage it in gently. Let the shampoo sit for 15 minutes. Then add water, lather the shampoo in the area and rinse it out well. Because clobetasol propionate is a powerful corticosteroid, it should not be used for more than two weeks and should not be used on face, groin, or arm pit areas. Do not cover the affected area with makeup or cosmetics.

Before taking clobetasol propionate, tell your doctor if:

  • You have a strange or allergic reaction to corticosteroids.
  • You are allergic to clobetasol propionate or any of the ingredients in this medication.

  • You have recently had a vaccine.
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, supplements, or vitamins, especially if you are using another medication that contains corticosteroids.

What are the possible side effects of taking clobetasol propionate?

Side effects from using clobetasol propionate include itching, irritation, redness, stinging, and dry, scaly skin at the site of application. If used for an extended period of time, corticosteroids can reduce the body’s own ability to fight infections.

What if I forget to take a dose of clobetasol propionate?

If you miss an application of clobetasol propionate, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How do I store clobetasol propionate?

Store clobetasol propionate tightly closed in its container at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not open this medication near a flame. Protect this medication from light and keep away from children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on clobetasol propionate?
