What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a generalized mood condition that can occur without an identifiable triggering stimulus. Anxiety is an emotional response that has developed through evolution to protect us from possible dangers and prevent death. The emotional effects of anxiety may include feelings of apprehension or dread and worry. Anxiety feels a lot like fear but it is distinct, as anxiety is a result of focusing on future possibilities while fear is a reaction to a threat in the present. This emotional response to possible threats is not considered to be a disorder unless it is debilitating and affects an individual’s everyday activities. In fact, a patient must experience irrational excessive worry and anxiety almost daily for at least six months to be considered to have Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

The behavioral effects of anxiety disorder may include withdrawal from situations or everyday activities which have provoked anxiety in the past. Anxiety disorders can also change sleeping patterns, result in nervous habits, and evince in increased motor tension like foot tapping. Many sufferers of GAD will also experience panic attacks, which involve hyperventilation, feeling faint, losing control and having tunnel vision. Some say they feel as if they’re having a heart attack. Causes of anxiety disorder are varied, ranging from hereditary to physiological conditions like an imbalance in neurotransmitters.

A common theory in evolutionary psychology is that anxiety developed to protect us and increase survival rate. Indeed, people with higher levels of anxiety are less likely to die in accidents due to their extreme caution. The theory is that modern society contrasts greatly with our anxiety adaptation. In the past there was more touching and affection between family members, especially between mothers and children, which reduced anxiety in our development. In modern society there is also more communication with strangers and distance from family which can result in abnormally high levels of anxiety. Particularly difficult childhoods, traumatic experiences, and growing up with parents with anxiety issues can also lead to the development of GAD.  Anxiety disorders include phobias, PSTD, OCD and panic disorder. Luckily anxiety disorders can be treated with anti anxiety medications and therapy.

How can I manage anxiety?

Anxiety Medication

Anxiety disorders can be treated with a variety of anxiety medications. The best anxiety medication ultimately depends on the response of the individual, although SNRIs and SSRIs are commonly prescribed as a first-line treatment for anxiety disorder.  Anxiety pills are considered to be a short-term treatment and an aid in overcoming anxiety disorder. They are not a cure. Therapy is more beneficial for the long-term treatment of anxiety. Read more about the different types of anxiety drugs in the Types of Medication Section.

Therapy

Therapy is actually the best medicine for an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are treated with cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) which is basically a re-education of the mind and restructuring of the behaviors that follow. A type of CBT called rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) is commonly used to treat anxiety. This therapy focuses on irrational thoughts and how these thoughts, not events themselves, lead to anxiety. REBT also helps the patient to utilize self-therapy skills. The positive effects of therapy can have a greater impact on anxiety disorder and outlast anxiety medications. Therapy works at curing anxiety and eliminating it at the source while anxiety pills offer a temporary fix.

What are the different types of common anxiety medications?

Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines are sedative drugs that are commonly used to treat anxiety. They enhance the activity of GABA neurotransmitters, producing a hypnotic, sedative, anticonvulsant and anxiolytic effect.  Because of their efficacy as a fast-acting sedative, they are commonly prescribed for panic attacks. Benzodiazepines are not the best medicine for anxiety in the long term, as they may lead to tolerance and physical dependency. This medication is not a cure for anxiety disorder and is only recommended for short-term use. Common benzodiazepines include Xanax, Valium and lorazepam.

SSRIs

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are anti anxiety drugs that work by increasing the availability of serotonin in the synaptic gap. These medications elevates mood and decrease stress. They are also used to treat depression. SSRIs have fewer side effects than benzodiazepines and are better for long-term use. Treating anxiety with SSRIs might cause elevated anxiety at the beginning before it leads to improved symptoms. Common SSRIs are Prozac and Zoloft.

SNRIs

Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors are like SSRIs but they also increase the concentration of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine along with serotonin. SNRIs work by generally elevating mood and increasing alertness and interest while decreasing nervousness. They are often used as anxiety medications and to treat depression and ADHD. Elevated levels of norepinephrine can sometimes cause higher blood pressure and pulse. Common SNRIs include Cymbalta and Effexor.

What are the symptoms of anxiety disorder?

Symptoms of GAD, or generalized anxiety disorder, include excessive chronic worry, even when there are no signs of trouble, insomnia, irritability, shaking, nausea, rapid heart rate, motor tension like continuous foot tapping, irrational worry of the worst possible outcomes, constant fear of death, frequent urination, withdrawal or avoidance of social activities and/or work, depression and panic attacks. Symptoms must persist for at least six months to determine a diagnosis of GAD.
