Epilepsy is a chronic condition characterized by seizures. Though it is often a lifelong affliction, some forms of epilepsy occur in childhood and disappear at adulthood. Though it is usually controllable with medication, it is not curable. Unfortunately, 30% of people with epileptic symptoms will continue to have seizures even while on anti-seizure medications. However, antiepileptic drugs can reduce the frequency and duration of seizures, making the condition more manageable. What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that results in seizures. There are different types of epilepsy and seizures, but they mostly stem from the improper firing of neurons in the central nervous system. Seizures that do not result from abnormal neural activity are considered non-epileptic seizures and require different treatment.

Because epilepsy results from abnormal neurological impulses, it is often the result of brain surgery or other head trauma, though it can also have a genetic root. Depending on the part of the brain that is affected, the form of the seizure can vary tremendously. Seizures can have a physical result such as twitching arms and legs, or it can have a mental result such as staring blankly for several seconds or disrupted thoughts.

How can I manage Epilepsy?

Drug Treatment
The preferred treatment for epilepsy is a long-term regimen of antiepileptic drugs. To find the appropriate type of medication, it is important to determine what type of epilepsy is occurring, not just what type of seizure. Some forms of epilepsy can create different types of seizures. The seizure is just the symptom, the treatment is most effective when targeted towards the disease; epilepsy.

Surgery
In cases where drug treatment is ineffective, there are surgical options for epileptic patients.  There are two types of surgery that may be considered. The first involves the removal of the affected areas of the brain so that the electrical impulses in that area stop. The second involves interrupting the pathways that the abnormal impulses are traveling. Both types are surgeries directly on the brain, so have significant risk. It will be attempted only if the source of the epilepsy in the brain can be determined and that source is not responsible for any vital functions.

What are the different types of Epilepsy medications?

Generally, epilepsy medications are known as anticonvulsants. Within this larger group of medications is a diverse group of drugs that have varying effects. Read through the different types of medications to get more information about the diverse group of anticonvulsants.

Carboxamides
Carboxamides have proven to be a popular medication for the management of epilepsy. Medication from this group of drugs is often the first prescription choice for doctors prescribing medication for epilepsy. Medication from this group of drugs has proven effective at helping manage epilepsy. Common side effects for this group of drugs include upset stomach, headaches, drowsiness and decreased tolerance to alcohol.

Succinimides
Numerous drugs from this group of medications are used as anticonvulsants. Succinimides used as anticonvulsants include: methsuximide, phensuximide and ethosuximide. Primarily, these drugs are used to treat absence seizures which are characterized by being short in duration. Common side effects for this group of drugs are gastrointestinal including: vomiting, decreased appetite, nausea and weight loss.

Fatty Acids
This group of medications includes: Vigabatrin, Progabide and Tiagabine a popular anticonvulsant. These medications help reduce seizures in epileptics by enhancing the activity of GABA a inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. The common side effects for this group of drugs are: confusion, stuttering, tingling sensations and drowsiness.

What are the symptoms of Epilepsy?

A seizure is the primary symptom of epilepsy, but it can appear in many different forms. Epilepsy can affect any process that is controlled by the brain. Common symptoms are temporary confusion, staring off into space, uncontrollable jerking movements, loss of consciousness or awareness, or other psychic symptoms. People experiencing the symptom may describe strange sensory experience, such as smelling or hearing things that aren’t there. If you experience a seizure, contact a medical professional to determine if it is epileptic and needs treatment.

Epilepsy Drug Information

Lamotrigine Information

Lamotrigine is an anti-seizure medication that is used to treat a wide variety of different types of seizures. Chemically, it is a phenyltriazine, making it different from most other anti-seizure drugs. This makes it a good option for patients who either don’t respond to traditional epilepsy medication or who are intolerant of those antiepileptic drugs. However, it carries a risk of significantly more side effects than other seizure medications.

Carbamazepine Information

Carbamazepine is a seizure medication that works to reduce the electrical impulses that cause seizures. In patients allergic to this medication, a severe, sometimes life-threatening rash has been reported. If you have any unusual skin reactions, contact your doctor immediately.

Ethosuximide Information

Ethosuximide is an anti-seizure medication that is used mainly to treat absence seizures, also known as petit mal seizures. It disrupts the pathways of the unwanted electrical impulses, decreasing the frequency of seizures. Common side effects include drowsiness, mental confusion, weight loss, and nausea.
