Creon Information:
What is Creon?
Creon is a prescription medication used for enzyme replacement therapy. It contains the digestive enzymes necessary to break down foods and is prescribed to people who have a condition that prevents their body from digesting food.
How do I take Creon?
Creon is typically taken every time you eat, whether you are having a snack or a full meal. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids with your medication. If you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, you can break it open and mix it with a small amount of soft food that doesn’t require chewing. These are general guidelines for taking Creon medicine; you should always follow your doctor’s specific instructions. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have additional questions.
Before taking Creon, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this medication, any other medications, or pork protein
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
- You have had acute pancreatitis
- Your pancreas condition has recently gotten worse
- You have any intestinal blockage problems
- You have gout
- You have kidney disease
- You have a high uric acid level in your blood
- You have diabetes
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Creon?
Some of the most commonly reported Creon drug side effects are headache, abdominal pain or bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, cough, and gas. If you have any of these symptoms and they persist or worsen, let your doctor know. Contact your doctor immediately if you have any rare but serious side effects, including frequent or painful urination, joint pain, severe stomach pain, or severe constipation.
What if I forget to take a dose of Creon?
If you forget to take a dose, skip it and take your next dose the next time you eat. Do not double your dose or take Creon medicine in between meals to catch up.
How do I store Creon?
Keep Creon at room temperature, away from light and moisture. This means you should avoid storing it in your bathroom medicine cabinet. As with all prescription medications, keep Creon out of reach of any children or pets in your house. If you no longer need this medication or it has expired, talk to your pharmacist about how to properly dispose of it.
What happens if I overdose on Creon?
Never take more of the Creon medicine than your doctor has prescribed. If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on this medication, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away.
Warnings
Because Creon can make you dizzy, don’t drive, operate heavy machinery, or participate in any other activities that require balance and alertness until you know how the medication affects you. You should also limit your alcohol consumption while using this medication. Let your doctor know if you have diabetes, as he or she may need to adjust your diabetes medication once you start taking the Creon drug.
